Job summary

New Directions is a social service agency serving Winnipeg and Western Manitoba. We are seeking adaptable Casual Support Workers to join our relief pool across diverse service areas in Winnipeg, MB.

The role involves person-centered support, trauma-informed relationship building, and advocating for autonomy, with training provided. The posted wage is $17.32/hour with flexible scheduling and opportunities for professional development.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent; post-secondary preferred in Social Work, Disability Services, or Early Childhood Education.
• Experience supporting children, youth, or adults with intellectual disabilities, mental health challenges, or complex needs.
• Strong de-escalation, conflict-resolution and active-listening skills.
• Valid Class 5 Driver's License; access to a reliable vehicle is an asset.

Responsibilities

• Provide person-centered support with daily living activities, personal care, life-skills development, and community participation.
• Establish trusting, consistent, and respectful relationships grounded in trauma-informed principles.
• Implement individualized support plans and practice non-violent crisis intervention and de-escalation strategies.
• Encourage autonomy, self-advocacy, and emotional regulation tailored to each person.
• Complete clear daily shift logs, incident reports, and medication administration records in compliance with agency standards.
• Provide safe transportation for individuals to medical appointments, community outings, and recreational activities.
• Assist with meal preparation, light housekeeping, errands, and maintaining a safe living environment.

Job Responsibilities:

• Person-Centered Support: Assist individuals with daily living activities, personal care, life-skills development, and community participation.

• Positive Behavioral Support: Implement individualized support plans and practice non-violent crisis intervention and proactive de-escalation strategies.
• Advocacy & Mentorship: Encourage autonomy, self-advocacy, and emotional regulation tailored to each person's unique strengths and goals.
• Documentation & Safety: Complete clear daily shift logs, incident reports, and medication administration records (as needed) in compliance with agency standards.
• Community Access & Transportation: Provide safe transportation for individuals to medical appointments, community outings, and recreational activities using personal or agency vehicles.
• Household Support: Assist with meal preparation, light housekeeping, errands, and maintaining a clean, safe living environment.

Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or equivalent. Preference will be given to candidates with post-secondary education in the area(s) of Social Work, Disability Services, or Early Childhood Education.
• Experience supporting children, youth, or adults with intellectual disabilities, mental health challenges, or complex needs. (Lived experience and volunteer work valued).
• Strong de-escalation, conflict-resolution and active-listening skills.
• A Valid Class 5 Driver's License.
• Access to a reliable vehicle is considered an asset (required for some service areas).
• Effective problem-solving ability & strong communication skills.
• The ability to work cohesively with others and be part of a team.
• First Aid/CPR and NVCI training will be provided as required.

The starting salary range for all casual employees is $17.3239 per hour.

The successful candidate will be subject to Criminal Record and Adult/Child Abuse Registry Checks; and must supply a satisfactory driver’s abstract.

Operating a vehicle is an essential duty of this role. Candidates must hold a valid, active driver's license in good standing to be eligible for hire.
