Job summary

McGill Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is seeking a Dental Assistant to support faculty and students in clinical and lab settings. The role includes preparing instruments, assisting in dental procedures, and ensuring infection control compliance.

The incumbent will participate in modelmaking, radiography on extracted teeth, and supervision of students during practical sessions. The position requires DEP in Dental Assistance, strong manual dexterity, and bilingual English/French

Qualifications

  • Dental Assistant Certification is a requirement.
  • Knowledge of dental laboratory procedures is asset.
  • High degree of manual dexterity.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • English and French spoken and written.

Responsibilities

  • Pour models / trim models for lab exercises and labs with large numbers.
  • Demonstrate to students how to pour and trim models.
  • Take radiographs on extracted teeth and assist in oral surgery tasks.
  • Support in setting up practical exams and maintaining equipment in the simulation lab.

Job description

Position Summary

Dental Assistant Position Summary: Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, assists staff and students in the treatment of patients. Assists in the instruction of dental students. Prepares and sets up instruments and materials. Ensures compliance with infection control. Schedules appointments. Compile reports. Ensures maintenance and supply of equipment and materials.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Laboratory tasks requiring to pour models / trim models for lab exercises. Number of models often exceeding 100.
  • Demonstrate to students how to pour models / trim models.
  • Work with extracted teeth.
  • Take radiographs on extracted teeth.
  • Oral surgery tasks requiring to work with animal parts – tongues / jaws.
  • Help setting up practical exams.
  • Help maintaining all equipment in simulation lab / plaster room.
  • Clean the plaster room with the help of the students.
  • Guide students with their practical requirements – appliances / dentures / custom trays etc.
  • Take alginate impressions.
  • Pour impressions – knowledge of different stones.
  • Type 1 / 2 /3 /4 / stone Trim models to specifications.
  • Mount models on articulator.
  • Fabricate surgical stent – surgical guide.
  • Knowledge of denture teeth – choose correct molds.
  • Fabricate custom trays – border molding / wax rims / teeth placement.
  • Fabricate ortho appliances – Essix retainers Placement of bands & bracketts for ortho.
  • Fabricate athletic mouth guards.
  • Fabricate bleaching trays (whitening).
  • Fabricate vacu shells for temporization.
  • Use putty for temporization.
  • Wax up teeth.
Other Qualifying Skills
  • Dental Assistant Certification is a requirement.
  • Knowledge of dental laboratory procedures is considered an asset.
  • High degree of manual dexterity.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • English and French spoken and written.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Proven ability to perform under pressure in a fast-paced, multi-tasking setting.
  • Ability to spend long hours standing, stretching, bending and light lifting.

Minimum Education and Experience: DEP - Dental Assistance

3 Years Related Experience / Hourly Salary: (MUNACA Level D) $26.18 - $32.46

Hours per Week: 33.75 (Full time)
