Job summary

Shannex Incorporated seeks a Daily Living Assistant to join Parkland At The Lakes 2 in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. You will assist residents with hygiene and daily living activities, follow care plans, and support restorative programs while maintaining safety and empathy for residents.

The role requires CPR & Emergency First Aid, a High School diploma or GED, and a CCA/PSW background; flexible hours including days, nights, weekends, and holidays are expected.

Qualifications

  • High School / GED completion is required.
  • CCA Course or Personal Support Worker preferred.
  • CPR & Emergency First Aid Certification is required.
  • Clear Criminal Record Check (and Vulnerable Sector Check where applicable) before appointment.
  • Food Safety / Food Handler course is an asset.
  • Alzheimer's/Dementia care course is an asset.
  • Palliative care course is an asset.
  • Previous eldercare or long-term care experience is an asset.
  • Flexible schedule incl. days, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Assist residents with hygiene and daily living activities (bathing, dressing, oral care, skin care, meals, mobility).
  • Support clients with special needs (eye care, colostomy, catheter care).
  • Participate in restorative care activities (walking program, ROM).
  • Receive and report daily; plan and organize daily work assignments.
  • Monitor for at-risk behaviors and intervene when needed.
  • Document care activities (Daily Care Flow Sheet).
  • Communicate changes in health status to supervisors.
  • Follow safety and infection control procedures; maintain resident safety.
  • Assist with social, spiritual, and intellectual activities for residents.
  • Clean resident rooms and common areas; assist with meal service.
  • Administer resident medications as assigned under supervision in line with policies.

About The Opportunity
  • Assists residents with hygiene and daily living activities, such as bathing, dressing, oral care, skin care, meals, and mobilizing according to the work assignment
  • Assist with client's special needs e.g. eye care, colostomy, and catheter care.
  • Assist in restorative care activitiesg. walking program, range of motion exercises.
  • Participates in and receives report daily. Plans and organizes daily work assignments; prioritizes the specific needs of the clients.
  • Monitors clients assessed for at risk behaviors (exploring, falls, choking, etc.) and intervenes appropriately when necessary.
  • Completes required documentation of work e.g. Daily Care Flow Sheet.
  • Communicates with the CSC if there is a noted change in the health status of the client e.g. decreases in appetite, increase in confusion, physical weakness, etc.
  • Ensures resident safety by following and applying all standard operational procedures, safe work practices and training provided.
  • Follows safety, environmental and infection control practices as per facility policies.
  • Assists in the provision of social, spiritual, and intellectual activities for residents.
  • Cleans resident rooms, server and household common areas
  • Administers resident medications as assigned under the direction of the Resident Services Coordinator/Manager and in accordance with Physician orders following all medication management policies and guidelines

  • Communicates and reports relevant information regarding resident care or safety to Supervior
About You

In addition to placing high value on continuous improvement, collaboration and accountability, you bring:

  • High School / GED completion
  • Continuing Care Assistant (CCA) Course or Personal Support Worker
  • Current CPR & Emergency First Aid Certification is required
  • Successful candidates will be required to obtain a clear Criminal Record Check, and where applicable, a Vulnerable Sector Check, prior to appointment.
  • Basic Food Safety /Food Handlers Course is considered an asset
  • Completed Alzheimer's Disease and other Dementia Care Course is considered an asset
  • Completed Palliative Care Course is considered an asset
  • Previous experience in working with the elderly in long-term care or a senior living environment is considered an asset
  • Ability to work a schedule of flexible hours and shifts inclusive of days, nights, weekends, and holidays
