Job summary

HAIDA GWAII BOARD OF EDUCATION SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 50 seeks a Temporary Custodian for Sḵ aadgaa Naay Elementary School. Start ASAP, with latest by August 31, 2027. The role covers cleaning, security and energy conservation, reporting to the Working Foreman.

Ideal candidates will have a Grade 12 education and be willing to learn WHMIS/WSBC safety practices, operate janitorial equipment, and lift or move items as needed. 30 hours weekly.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 level of education is required.
• WHMIS and WSBC safety regulations knowledge.
• Ability to read and understand written safety instructions.
• Mechanical aptitude to operate janitorial equipment.
• Ability to work alone or with peers as needed.
• Willingness to obtain WorkSafe BC – Level I First Aid if requested.

Responsibilities

• Maintain cleanliness, security, and energy conservation of the building.
• Receive direction from the Working Foreman and perform tasks for staff.
• Occasionally perform outdoor tasks and handle unpleasant tasks.
• Indoor work for most tasks with occasional outdoor duties.
• Lift, push, reach, bend and carry as required.

TEMPORARY CUSTODIAN

Sḵ aadgaa Naay Elementary School

(PRIMARILY)

START DATE: As soon as possible to the full return of the incumbent or no later than

August 31, 2027.

SALARY: $29.59 per hour, plus a shift premium of $1.00 when applicable

HOURS OF WORK: Thirty (30) hours per week

The Custodian is responsible for the cleanliness, security, and energy conservation of the building to which assigned the Daajing Giids - Skidegate area. Receives direction from the Working Foreman and is required from time-to-time to carry-out requests of the school staff.

Qualifications:

• Grade 12 level of education is required.
• Previous training and/or experience in janitorial procedures would be an asset or the willingness to learn and maintain safe and proper cleaning techniques.
• Maintain familiarity with Workplace Hazardous materials Information System (WHMIS) and WorkSafe BC (WSBC) safety regulations.
• Possess the ability to read and comprehend written instructions and “safety” warning of the products the employee uses and use such products safely.
• Possess mechanical aptitude to operate such janitorial equipment that is used within the facility, proper use and care.
• Possess the ability to meet and deal tactfully with students, members of staff and the public.
• The position is one that has inherent sensory and physical tasks and as such the job requires the capability to perform tasks such as lifting, pushing, holding, reaching, bending and carrying.
• The position is one that is primarily indoors but occasionally requires going outside and at times unpleasant tasks are called for owing to the nature of the work.
• Must be able to work alone, but be co-operative with peers when major tasks are encountered.
• Willingness to obtain WorkSafe BC – Level I First Aid if requested.
