About the Role :

As the Cultural Events Coordinator for the Huron-Superior Regional Métis Community (Region 4) at the Métis Nation of Ontario, you will play a pivotal role in preserving and promoting Métis culture through the organization and execution of cultural events, activities, and initiatives within Region 4. Reporting to the Regional Manager, you will be responsible for conceptualizing, securing resources for, planning, and coordinating events that reflect the rich heritage, traditions, and contemporary life of the Métis community.

What you will be doing :

  • Event Planning and Coordination :

Develop and implement an annual workplan and calendar of cultural events aligned with the Huron-Superior Regional Metis Community’s cultural priorities and objectives

  • Seek out, and prepare applications for grants, donations, gifts, in-kind contributions, and fundraisers to support events
  • Coordinate logistics for events including venue selection, vendor management, and scheduling
  • Secure necessary permits, insurance, and contracts for events as required.
  • Assist Métis Tours with the scheduling and coordinating of logistics for the tourism season
  • Facilitation of Metis Cultural events – training will be provided – beadwork, weaving, etc.
  • Community Engagement :

Work closely with Métis Community Councils, local organizations, and stakeholders to ensure events are inclusive and representative of Métis culture

  • Foster partnerships and collaborations to enhance the reach and impact of cultural events
  • Provide support to the Region’s two community councils, as requested, to assist in the successful planning and execution of their community events
  • Recruit and supervise volunteers for community events
  • Develop promotional materials and campaigns to raise awareness and participation in cultural events
  • Utilize digital platforms, social media, and traditional media outlets to promote events and engage with the Métis community and broader public
  • Support with event-related inquiries from participants, vendors, sponsors, and internal teams.
  • Distribute information and updates to relevant stakeholders before, during, and after events.
  • Evaluation and Reporting :

Conduct post-event evaluations to assess effectiveness and gather feedback for continuous improvement

  • Prepare reports on event outcomes, attendance, and impact for stakeholders and funding purposes
  • Maintain accurate records of event details, expenses, and other relevant information.
  • Contribute to post-event reports on recommendations for future improvements.

Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s degree in Event Management, Cultural Studies, Indigenous Studies, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Proven experience in event planning, preferably in a cultural or community-focused environment

  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to troubleshoot and problem-solve.
  • Familiarity with event management software / tools is a plus.
  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office – Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint
  • Strong desire to act in the service of the Métis Citizens, to advance and uphold rights and culture
  • Ability to work alone / independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • frequent travel required within the Algoma District and elsewhere in the province

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Experience dealing with confidential information
  • Experience working in coordinating and delivering programs and / or services

Positions at the MNO may require the following :

  • Current CPR / First Aid certification or ability to obtain
  • Completion and maintenance of Vulnerable Sector Verification
  • A reliable vehicle (or ability to rent), driver’s licence, $1,000,000 liability insurance, and a clean driving record
  • Flexibility to work extended hours as necessary
  • Ability to occasionally travel within Ontario for limited periods of time
