About The Role
The Cook 1 reports to the Head Chef or designate and is responsible for preparing nourishing and visually appealing meals for residents, guests, and staff. The role involves ensuring dietary needs are met and safe food handling practices are followed.
Responsibilities
- Be an engaged team player, developing professional relationships to support organizational culture.
- Review menus and production sheets before preparing meals.
- Follow proper food handling techniques according to regulations.
- Perform daily temperature checks for hot and cold foods.
- Conduct temperature audits for refrigeration units and record findings.
- Prepare and serve foods for therapeutic or specialty diets as per menus.
- Make menu substitutions as needed and record them appropriately.
- Coordinate workflow and direct staff related to meal production, delivery, and cleanup.
- Order and receive consumables following purchasing procedures, maintaining inventory to minimize waste.
- Adhere to meal service schedules.
- Follow production charts, recipes, and menus within budget constraints.
- Participate in planning and preparing special meals and events.
- Assist in orienting new staff and participate in community programs and meetings.
- Maintain a safe environment, adhering to safety and infection control procedures.
- Contribute to organizational planning for Food Services.
- Supervise department operations in the supervisor’s absence.
- Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications & Skills
- Grade 12 or equivalent.
- Graduation from a recognized Cooks Training program or equivalent experience.
- Experience in large-scale food preparation, preferably in healthcare or retirement settings.
- Knowledge of Provincial Food Premises regulation and Canada’s Food Guide.
- Experience with special and therapeutic diets.
- 2-3 years of culinary experience.
- Food Safe Level 1 Certificate; Level 2 is an asset.
- Red Seal Certificate preferred.
- Serving it Right certification is an asset.
- Knowledge of sanitation standards.
- Supervisory experience is an asset.
- Successful candidates must pass a vulnerable sector Criminal Record Check.
- Creativity, attention to detail, organizational skills, and delegation abilities.
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work with cleaning supplies.
- Strong teamwork and independent work skills.
- Proficiency in English, both written and verbal.
