About The Role

The Cook 1 reports to the Head Chef or designate and is responsible for preparing nourishing, appealing meals for residents, guests, and staff, while ensuring dietary needs are met and safe food handling practices are followed.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with team members and develop professional relationships.
  • Review menus and production sheets before preparing meals.
  • Follow proper food handling techniques based on regulations.
  • Conduct daily temperature checks for food and storage areas.
  • Prepare meals for special diets as per menus.
  • Make menu substitutions and record them appropriately.
  • Coordinate workflow and provide direction to staff involved in meal production and service.
  • Manage ordering, receiving, and inventory to minimize waste.
  • Adhere to meal service schedules and work within budgets.
  • Participate in planning special meal days and community programs.
  • Maintain safety standards and participate in organizational planning.
  • Supervise department operations in the absence of the supervisor.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications & Skills
  • Grade 12 or equivalent; recognized Cooks Training or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in large-scale food preparation, preferably in healthcare or retirement settings.
  • Knowledge of provincial regulations and Canada’s Food Guide.
  • Experience with therapeutic diets; 2-3 years culinary experience.
  • Food Safe Level 1 certification; Level 2 and Red Seal preferred.
  • Serving it Right certification is an asset.
  • Knowledge of sanitation standards and supervisory experience is an asset.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work with cleaning supplies.
  • Strong teamwork, organizational, and independent working skills.
  • Proficiency in English, verbal and written instructions.
