Job Description

Position Purpose Summary

The Cook at The Salvation Army's Nanaimo New Hope Centre plays a pivotal role in fulfilling our mission to serve and support individuals and families in need within our community. This position is responsible for creating nourishing and balanced meals that provide sustenance, warmth, and comfort to those who rely on our services. The Cook ensures that the kitchen operates efficiently, meals are prepared to high standards, and dietary requirements are met while maintaining a strong commitment to food safety and community engagement.

Basic Functions/Responsibilities

  • Plan and prepare nutritious meals following established menus, efficiently utilizing all food resources including leftovers and donations.
  • Prepare a variety of foods, including portions, carving meats, and vegetable servings, adhering to proper kitchen practices.
  • Maintain a wholesome and appealing menu presentation.
  • Assist with preparation for special luncheons and events as requested by the Food Services Manager.
  • Maintain a professional and clean kitchen environment, managing equipment and dining area standards.
  • Manage inventory, including ordering and recommending supplies, and understand the impact of donations on supply and demand.
  • Ensure cleanliness and health standards are met in the kitchen and dining areas.
  • Supervise and instruct kitchen helpers and volunteers.
  • Organize food items for easy access, proper storage, and stock rotation.
  • Receive, inspect, and store incoming food supplies appropriately.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications And Education Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of two years of related cook/food service education.
  • Current Food Safe Certification.
  • Occupational First Aid Level 1 or equivalent.
  • Clear TB skin test.
  • WHMIS certification (asset).
  • Clear criminal record check through the BC Criminal Record Review Program.

Experience

  • At least two years of professional kitchen experience as a Cook.
  • Proficiency in preparing, cooking, and presenting a wide range of dishes.
  • Knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices.
  • Ability to manage inventory and minimize waste.
  • Basic budgeting skills.
  • Proficiency in various cooking techniques.

  • Computer literacy or willingness to train.
  • Calmness in busy, stressful situations.
  • Organizational and time management skills.

Hours: Full-time

Candidates may be required to provide:

  • Background check consent.
  • Vulnerable sector screening.
  • Clean driver’s abstract.
  • Completion of online Armatus Abuse Training and health and safety training.

Compensation
