Job summary

Job description

On site, Downtown Toronto

1 Year Full Time Contract

Level #6

Purpose of Position

The chosen candidate will be responsible for the direct implementation of Covenant House philosophy, mission statement, and policies as they pertain to disconnected, homeless, and hard-to-serve youth. As a member of the community support services team, you will establish relationships, provide counselling, and case management on an ongoing basis via networking in the community.


Responsibilities:
  1. Develop and manage brief service and community support plans
  2. Provide a welcoming environment to youth
  3. Establish healthy relationships by engaging with youth
  4. Provide daily ongoing supportive and crisis counselling
  5. De-escalate physically and verbally hostile situations
  6. Assess youth’s needs for food and provide meals and food packages in accordance with safe food handling practices
  7. Refer clients to appropriate resources within Covenant House and in the community
  8. Support youth in reconciling with family
  9. Capture statistics on ETO
  10. Document client touchpoints on ETO system
  11. Gather and update information, e.g., flyers, posters, etc.
  12. Clean kitchen including defrosting freezer, cleaning refrigerator, washing dishes, cleaning milk machine, stove, and microwaves
  13. Screen for weapons, drugs, gang paraphernalia, alcohol
  14. Back up and relief for C.S.S. reception

Qualifications:
  1. Applicants must possess a Child and Youth Worker diploma
  2. A minimum of 2 years working experience with hard-to-serve youth
  3. Skilled in assessments, diffusion, intervention, and counselling, with excellent verbal and written skills
  4. Team player with the ability to understand and support volunteers' needs
  5. Ability to work with a high degree of autonomy
  6. Working knowledge of community resources, safe food handling, First Aid, CPR, and basic computer skills
