Job summary

Calgary Food Bank is seeking a Content and Engagement Specialist to own the story and content pipeline across communications. You will gather stories from clients, volunteers, donors, staff and partners and transform them into web, email, and donor content that reflects our mission.

You will write, edit, and proofread for clarity and tone, adapting complex information into plain language while upholding dignity and consent.

At the Calgary Food Bank our mission is “to make food accessible to everyone in our city”. Our core belief is that no one in our community should go without food, and this continues to serve as our guiding principle for the future. We are the first line of emergency food support for people facing crisis and served over 200,000 Emergency Food Hampers to our community last year. We also provide over 80 partner charities throughout the city with food. The Opportunity

Reporting to the Director of Community Engagement, the Content and Engagement Specialist ownsthe story and content pipeline behind Calgary Food Bank’s communications. They are responsible for staying close to the people, programs, research, and relationships that make the organization’s work real. They help turn internal knowledge, lived experience, data, and community impact into clear, accurate, and human content. The content they develop should feed social, email, website content, donor communications, partner materials, volunteer communications, reports, earned media preparation, and future campaign work.

What You’ll Do
Story Gathering and Development:
  • Identify and develop stories from clients, volunteers, donors, partners, staff, Food Link, Neoma, food rescue, programs, and community events.
  • Conduct interviews with staff, volunteers, partners, donors, and, where appropriate, clients.
  • Build stories that show dignity, access, community, food movement, donor impact, volunteer impact, and Calgary Food Bank’s wider role.
  • Maintain a practical story bank that can support ongoing communications, donor stewardship, partner engagement, media opportunities, and campaign activity.
  • Help Calgary Food Bank move from one-off stories to a more planned and consistent storytelling pipeline.
Writing and Editorial Development:
  • Write and edit web stories, impact stories, donor updates, volunteer features, partner profiles, newsletters, research summaries, internal updates, stewardship content, and campaign-support materials.
  • Support longer-form communications, including annual report content, donor reports, public education materials, campaign updates, thought-leadership content, media releases, advisories, speaking notes, interview preparation materials, and key messages.
  • Edit and proofread content for clarity, tone, accuracy, accessibility, and consistency.
  • Adapt complex or sensitive information into plain-language content that different audiences can understand.
  • Help ensure Calgary Food Bank’s written communications feel clear, human, credible, and aligned to the organization’s values.
Research and Proof Translation:
  • Work with the research team to turn data and findings into clear, accessible communications.
  • Develop research summaries, FAQs, web content, email inputs, social inputs, talking points, and proof points.
  • Help explain food insecurity in Calgary through local evidence and human examples.
  • Support a governed fact bank with approved statistics, definitions, sources, reporting periods, and internal owners.
  • Ensure statistics, stories, and research are used accurately and consistently across communications.
  • Help Calgary Food Bank strengthen its role as a local source on food insecurity, affordability, access, and community need.
Content Adaptation and Coordination:
  • Turn long-form stories, reports, research, and updates into usable content inputs for social, email, web, donor communications, partner materials, and internal updates.
  • Work closely with the Digital Communications Coordinator so strong stories and proof can be adapted into the right channel and format.
  • Identify the strongest quotes, facts, examples, and calls to action within longer content.
  • Build content around priority themes such as working households, seniors, volunteer impact, donor impact, Food Link, food rescue, Neoma, client choice, and access closer to home.
  • Support a coordinated content calendar by identifying upcoming story opportunities, seasonal needs, partner moments, and campaign milestones.
Consent, Dignity, and Story Use:
  • Coordinate consent for client, volunteer, donor, partner, and staff stories.
  • Ensure stories are gathered and used in ways that respect privacy, dignity, and choice.
  • Maintain records of permissions, restrictions, usage notes, and story approvals where relevant.
  • Work with internal teams to confirm sensitivities before stories are shared publicly.
  • Flag content that may require leadership review, additional approval, or careful handling.
Volunteer and Partner Communications:
  • Develop volunteer stories, recognition content, updates, FAQs, newsletters, and educational content.
  • Support partner stories, profiles, toolkits, shared messaging, and recognition content.
  • Help volunteers and partners understand Calgary Food Bank’s wider role beyond emergency hampers.
  • Create content that helps move partners from one-time participation into deeper engagement.
  • Support communications around food drives, service changes, campaign activity, partner activations, volunteer needs, and community events.
Campaign Support:

During campaign activity, this role helps source and develop the stories, proof, and content inputs that make the campaign credible and human.

  • Strong organization and ability to manage story banks, approvals, deadlines, and content pipelines.
  • Efficient writing style, with the ability to turn interviews, notes, research, and internal updates into clear usable content without slowing down delivery.
  • Respect for the sensitivity of food insecurity and the people Calgary Food Bank serves.
Recommended Experience
  • 3–5+ years of experience in communications, content writing, storytelling, journalism, nonprofit communications, public relations, or a related role.
  • Strong writing portfolio across web, long-form content, newsletters, reports, stories, or public-facing communications.
  • Experience interviewing people and developing human-centred stories.
  • Experience working with research, reports, data, or complex information would be an asset.
  • Experience in nonprofit, social impact, healthcare, education, public service, or community development comms.
  • Familiarity with website content, SEO basics, email content, and social content adaptation.
  • Degree, diploma, or equivalent experience in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, English, or a related field.
