Job summary

CIHI is seeking a cooperative education student to support the Health Spending and Operations team in analytics and data projects. You will assist with costing analytics, validate data quality, and help implement SOPs while collaborating with cross-functional teams.

The role provides hands-on experience with healthcare data, AI/ML exploration, and opportunities to contribute to national health expenditure and MIS data initiatives in Canada.

Qualifications

• Must be an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in a co-op program.
• Experience working with data, including analysis and manipulation.
• Proficiency in Python; experience with Pandas/NumPy/PySpark preferred.
• Exposure to AI/ML concepts and techniques is an asset.
• Excel experience, including VBA, is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Assist with hospital costing analytics operations and key deliverables.

Why is this role important?

In this role, you will contribute to priority initiatives within the Health Spending and Operations (HSO) department, supporting CIHI\’s mandate of better data, better decisions, for healthier Canadians. This is a unique opportunity to gain hands‑on experience with healthcare data and analytics, while working on projects that directly inform decision-making across Canada\’s health system.

HSO is responsible for maintaining the national Management Information System (MIS) Standards, National Health Expenditure Database (NHEX) which collecting financial and statistical data from health service organizations and health expenditure information across the country. This data feeds into CIHI\’s Canadian MIS Database (CMDB), Canadian Patient Cost Database (CPCD), and NHEX which are used to produce key indicators, analytical tools, and reports that enable meaningful comparisons in health spending and system performance. The work is both complex and impactful - offering you exposure to real-world data challenges and solutions.

What you\’ll do

As a co-op student, you will support a range of projects and operational activities within HSO. Working under the guidance of a Program Lead, you may:

• Assist with hospital costing analytics operations, and key deliverables
• Support data quality validation and explore opportunities to enhance validation processes using AI, and machine learning techniques
• Assist in identifying data issues, patterns, and anomalies to support the quality and reliability of analytical outputs
• Contribute to the development, documentation, and improvement of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and analytical processes
• Participate in team meetings and contribute to ongoing project discussions, testing, and problem‑solving activities
• Assist with additional departmental priorities, analytical projects, and process improvement initiatives as needed

What you\’ll bring to the table

• Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program (e.g., computer science, data science, health informatics, epidemiology, economics, finance, accounting, statistics, or a related field) with a co-op requirement
• Experience working with data, including analysis and manipulation (healthcare data is an asset)
• Proficiency in Python and experience using Pandas, NumPy, or PySpark
• Exposure to AI and/or Machine Learning(ML) concepts and techniques; experience applying AI/ML methods to data analysis or automation projects is an asset
• Experience with Microsoft Excel, including macro/VBA development
• Excellent attention to detail, organization, and communication skills
• A proactive mindset with the ability to take initiative, learn quickly, and work collaboratively in a team environment
