Job summary

CIHI is seeking an Executive Director, Standards, Governance and Stewardship, reporting to the Vice President, Data Strategies and Statistics. The role leads enterprise-wide governance and stewardship frameworks to enable trusted health data use across CIHI and partners, including governments and health systems.

Qualifications

• Degree in a relevant discipline with focus on data governance, standards, stewardship, information management or related field.
• Minimum 10–12 years of progressive, enterprise-wide portfolio leadership in data governance or related environment.
• Fluency in English; bilingualism is an asset.

Why is this role important?

Reporting to the Vice President & Chief Operations Officer, Business Operations Division, the Executive Director provides enterprise leadership and strategic direction for the standards, governance and stewardship frameworks that enable CIHI and its partners, including governments, health systems and other stakeholders, to use health data consistently, responsibly and effectively. The Executive Director leads the evolution of data and information governance, stewardship, standards, classifications and related frameworks, strengthening consistency, interoperability, trust and responsible data use across CIHI and the broader Canadian health data ecosystem, increasingly enabled by emerging technologies and AI.

The portfolio is focused on creating conditions that allow data to be trusted, connected and used effectively. It inherently has strong interdependencies with Data Management and Analytics, while maintaining primary accountability for establishing and maintaining the standards, governance and stewardship frameworks that enable consistent and responsible data use.

What you'll do

• 1. Provide strategic leadership and direction for the Standards, Governance & Stewardship portfolio, aligned with CIHI’s mandate, strategic priorities and evolving data environment.
• 2. Lead the development and execution of portfolio priorities, plans and initiatives to strengthen data standards, governance, stewardship and responsible data use.
• 3. Oversee the effective allocation of financial, human and technical resources, ensuring sustainable delivery and value for investment.
• 4. Drive integration and collaboration across portfolios and functions, identifying and removing organizational, operational and other barriers that inhibit progress and the advancement of enterprise priorities.
• 5. Strengthen integration across related data, analytics, technology, privacy and corporate functions and identify opportunities to strengthen consistency and coordination across the organization.
• 6. Provide executive advice on emerging opportunities, risks, priorities and decisions affecting CIHI’s data standards, governance and stewardship environment.
• 7. Build strong relationships with internal and external partners to advance shared objectives, foster alignment and support the adoption and effective application of standards, governance approaches and stewardship practices.
• 8. Lead a high-performing, multidisciplinary team and foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, accountability, inclusion and continuous improvement.
• 9. Champion change and modernization within the portfolio, challenging established approaches where appropriate and creating the conditions for timely decision-making, execution and progress.

What you'll bring to the table

• Degree in a relevant discipline, including data Science, health data analytics, information management, governance, business, technology or a related field. An advanced degree is considered an asset.
• Minimum 10-12 years of progressive experience leading complex, enterprise-wide portfolios, initiatives and organizational change in a leadership capacity with a focus on data governance, standards, stewardship, information management or a related environment.
• Strong understanding of data governance, stewardship, standards and related practices, and their role in supporting trusted and effective use of information.
• Demonstrated ability to develop strategy, translate priorities into action and deliver results in complex and evolving environments.
• Demonstrated ability to work across organizational boundaries, navigate competing priorities and dependencies, and identify and remove barriers that impede execution or organizational progress.
• Strong relationship-building, consultation, negotiation and communication skills, with the ability to influence and build alignment among senior leaders and diverse internal and external partners.
• Demonstrated judgment and decision-making skills, with the ability to balance strategic priorities, risks, resources and operational considerations.
• Ability to fulfill travel requirements.
• Fluency in English is required, bilingualism in both official languages is an asset.
