Zurich Canada is currently looking for a Claims Specialist in our Toronto office. Reporting to the Claims Team Manager, you will handle accident benefit and loss transfer claims for commercial and personal lines insureds of low to moderate exposure and complexity within specific limits of authority. Your role is to follow established protocols to ensure claims are handled efficiently and effectively, delivering customer-centric service.
This position emphasizes delivering service to external clients and building relationships, with a focus on excellent customer service and proactive communication to keep clients informed throughout the claims process.
This is a hybrid work opportunity.
What you will do
- Handle Accident Benefits claims in good faith, complying with legislative requirements and best practices.
- Manage Accident Benefit claims up to non-catastrophic limits.
- Handle minor to moderate loss transfer claims.
- Determine priorities for commercial and personal accident benefit claims.
- Document claims files accurately and update claims data in accordance with best practices, including LAT disputes.
- Exercise judgment to determine liability by gathering relevant facts, applying applicable law, and establishing negligence principles.
- Perform policy verification and coverage determination by analyzing applicable coverage and assessing if the loss falls within accident benefits coverage.
- Develop case strategies to ensure timely resolution, escalating issues when necessary.
- Establish reserves and review claims throughout the cycle within authority limits, estimating and validating claim values.
- Assess damages by calculating applicable damages or ranges allowed by law.
- Negotiate settlements using appropriate strategies and available tools within authority limits.
- Maintain quality standards by adhering to best practices.
Job Qualifications - What You Bring To The Table
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree or college diploma in a relevant field, or equivalent work experience with 1+ years in accident benefit claims.
- Good knowledge of insurance claims processes.
- General understanding of automobile insurance policies and products.
- Results-driven with the ability to multi-task, pay attention to detail, and follow procedures.
- Proven leadership and time management skills in a team environment.
- Excellent writing and presentation skills.
Preferred:
- 1-2 years of experience handling accident benefit claims within MIG and up to non-catastrophic limits.
- Experience managing Income Replacement Benefit claims.
- Experience with claims reviews and stakeholder presentations.
- Ability to build relationships with brokers, underwriting partners, and other teams.
- Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Understanding of claims adjustment processes and ability to determine scope/exposure.
- Knowledge of financial and actuarial/reserving concepts.
- Familiarity with negotiation strategies and alternative approaches.
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
- Proven customer service experience.
- Proficiency with Office 365 tools.
- Actively pursuing or completed the Canadian Insurance Institute (CIP) designation.
