Job summary

The University of Guelph seeks a Third Class Operating Engineer to supervise safe, reliable operation of the Central Utilities Plant, supporting campus facilities 24/7 with steam, heating, cooling and related equipment. Under the Chief Operating Engineer, you will inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, respond to alarms, and ensure compliance with safety policies and shift schedules including 12-hour rotations.

Qualifications

• Valid Third Class Power (Operating) Engineer Certificate.
• 2–3 years of operating experience in a central utilities plant or similar.
• Experience with gas/oil-fired boiler systems and centrifugal chillers.
• Knowledge of diesel engines and air compressors.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
• Ability to work rotating shifts and overtime.

Responsibilities

• Maintain safe, reliable operation of the Central Utilities Plant.
• Perform inspections, preventative maintenance, and checks on plant systems.
• Ensure compliance with regulations and safety procedures.
• Follow University policies to sustain a safe work environment.
• Perform routine equipment checks and minor maintenance.
• Identify problems and perform basic troubleshooting.
• Collaborate with maintenance staff, contractors and other departments.
• Maintain logs, shift reports, meter readings, and maintenance records.
• Respond to emergencies, outages, and abnormal conditions per procedures.
• Support planned shutdowns and maintenance activities.
