Job summary

The Salvation Army Brantford Booth Centre seeks a casual relief worker for a 53-bed emergency hostel and corrections residence. The role offers shift flexibility, no guaranteed hours, and unionized status.

You will perform intake, assessments and referrals, while maintaining confidentiality and safety in a 24-hour service environment. Applicants should have a Social Service diploma or related experience, strong communication skills, and current First Aid/CPR.

Qualifications

  • University/College diploma in Social Service or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Competent with Windows Office tools (Word, Excel).
  • Ability to work with socially disadvantaged people and federal release clients.
  • Must have First Aid, CPR and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certificates.
  • Provide a CRC with vulnerable sector screening; Enhanced Reliability Screening may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain an active caseload.
  • Complete intake and assessment for each resident.
  • Provide problem solving/referral counselling to shelter and CRF clients.
  • Develop networks and referrals to community resources.
  • Record activities and incidents accurately in logs.

Job Description

POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY: The Brantford Booth Centre is a 53 bed emergency men’s hostel and Correctional Residence Facility, offering room and board to men who require transitional housing and federal release programs. It is a 24-hour operation. This is a casual relief position with no guaranteed hours. Flexibility in scheduling is required. The work schedule is determined in consultation with your supervisor and may vary according to requirements of responsibility. This is a Unionized position.

Accountabilities
  • Maintain an active caseload.
  • Complete an intake and assessment on each resident.
  • Provide problem solving/referral counselling to shelter and CRF Clients.
  • Develop a network and make referrals to existing services and resources in the community including those of other Salvation Army departments. Handling harm reduction supplies.
  • Design and implement, in consultation with supervisor, an interview schedule that will provide an evaluation of 'quality of life' improvement of successful program participants.
  • Provide assistance to front desk personnel as necessary, including responding to client issues and crises.
  • Record activities and incidents occurring during the shift in a factual and concise manner using Log Book and/or Incident Occurrence Reports.
  • Contact emergency service personnel (ambulance or police) when necessary.
  • Maintain confidentiality with regard to clients/staff and Centre's records.
  • Work closely with and carry out tasks assigned to you by your supervisor.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Education, Qualifications and Certifications
  • University/College diploma in Social Service and/or combination of education and related life experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and effective interpersonal skills.
  • Competent on word processing equipment, such as Windows XP, Microsoft Office, Excel.
  • Ability to work with socially disadvantaged people.
  • Ability to work with federal release clients to develop and carry out a life plan.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and implement goals and plans for self and clients.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and under supervision.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of Community based resources.
  • Possess current First Aid, CPR, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certificates.
  • Provide an original copy of a Criminal Records Check (CRC) with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Note: A satisfactory criminal background check is required and in addition to this The Enhanced Reliability Screening with Corrections Canada.
  • Support for and an understanding of the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada.
  • NOTE: Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

  • Ability to lift/carry up to forty pounds.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.

Compensation: The target hiring range for this position is $23.77 to $23.77 with a maximum of $23.77. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
