Job summary

The Salvation Army Florence Booth House in Toronto is seeking a Front-Line Worker to deliver direct support and resources to residents. You will ensure a safe environment while guiding clients through intake, meals, and basic care needs, always upholding our values of hope, dignity and service.

Responsibilities include recording interactions, assisting with housing and referrals, coordinating meals and activities, and maintaining documentation.

Qualifications

  • Education and certifications in Social/Human Services or related field.
  • Prior frontline social service experience.
  • Knowledge of homelessness, addiction counselling and mental health.
  • CPR/First Aid certification required.
  • Crisis Intervention certification beneficial.
  • Police check clearance required.
  • Adheres to Salvation Army values and ethics.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct support and resources to residents.
  • Record intake, assignments and medication distribution as required.
  • Monitor mealtimes, housing time, and safety procedures.
  • Maintain logs, incident reports and client records.

Job Description

POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY: The Front-Line Worker is responsible for delivering exceptional direct support, assistance and encouragement to The Gateway clients. The accomplishing of the Salvation Army’s mission starts with the Front-Line Workers’ ability to provide the residents with the resources they require to maximize their full potential in all spheres of life body, mind and soul. It is imperative that the incumbent align the delivery of their services with the core values by committing to a high standard of excellence and treating all staff and residents with respect and dignity. The Front-Line Worker provides a safe and secure environment for residents and visitors.

SERVICE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • All Shifts Signs in for shift and reads all Logbook entries
  • Take on role as Fire Captain each shift during emergency situations
  • Handles the admission, orientation for new intakes.
  • Read and review house rules with new intake and complete the Triage
  • Ensure enforcement of house rules, including behavior modification discussions, giving/reviewing warnings and behavioral contracts
  • Enters all Intakes and Discharges on SMIS, process intake paperwork and upload necessary documents on SMIS
  • Print out SMIS bed log at end of shift and ensure that SMIS, the bed roster and Logbook match all shift activity, and ensure SMIS Queue is up to date
  • Accurately records day-to-day happening using appropriate methods; maintains logbooks and completes incident reports
  • Keeps a record of Presto Cards distributed and confirm how many cards are remaining before and at the conclusion of the shift
  • Monitors the activities of the residents and maintains availability for personal, practical and moral support
  • Provides the residents with their stored medication having them complete the medication distribution form, including providing safe storage and recording of prescribed medication, as requested by the resident.
  • Liaises with internal referral sources and external agencies as needed
  • Keep a record of bag lunch, late dinner requests and food allergies
  • Distribute late meals, bag lunches, coffee/tea, and serve snacks
  • Announce mealtimes, secure volunteers for tidying up
  • Oversee mealtimes and provide supervision in the serving area
  • Empty garbage cans as needed
  • Sweep/mop serving area as needed
  • Make announcements to residents as needed
  • Write messages for residents and notify residents accordingly
  • Distribute clothing and personal hygiene items as requested by the residents
  • Provide harm reduction resources and distribute safe use supplies as requested
  • Accept and document in the communication log donations received; place donations in storage bins to be washed, sorted and stored in the Storage Room
  • Respond to and direct all telephone inquiries/voicemails accordingly
  • Carries out wellness checks throughout the building in accordance with policies and procedures
  • Record all facility issues and concerns on the appropriate Work Order/Supply Order document
  • Assist residents with signing up for computer, and laundry services and monitor usage and provide support as needed
  • Assists and participates in resident functions on special occasions or activities
  • Place used walkie talkie on charger at the end of each shift
  • Contact repair people as needed
  • Approve overnight passes, working passes and curfew extensions
  • Tidy front desk/intake area throughout the shift
  • Assist residents who are Triaged at Level 1 with any resources/referrals that may be required as their Keyworker
  • Bag/label residents’ belongings and place in storage room that have been left behind according to policies and procedures
  • Cleaning/disinfect cots and make available for new intake in the absence of housekeeping
  • Perform other duties required by administration
  • Night Shift specific. Complete nightly bed checks and discharge as needed, as per policy and procedure
ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT Internal: Reports directly to the Front Line Supervisor
  • Indirectly reports to the Property Manager, Assistant Director and/or the Director
  • Develop close working relationships with all staff within the organization including Housekeeper, Janitors, Case Worker, Housing Worker, Community Follow-Up Worker, Chaplain, Administration and the Management Team
  • External: Establish and maintain good working relationships with external agencies to make the appropriate referrals.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Education, Qualifications and Certifications: High School Graduate with a diploma in the Social Services or Human Services field.
  • Prior related experience, including experience with frontline work in a social service setting
  • Knowledge and understanding of Homelessness, Addictions Counselling and Mental Health
  • Certification in CPR/First Aid
  • Certification in Crisis Intervention
  • Police check clearance
  • Adhere to standards that are consistent with the values & philosophy of The Salvation Army and Florence Booth House

Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $21.28 to $26.60 with a maximum of $31.92. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
