Job summary

Tata Steel Minerals Canada is seeking a Carpenter/Journeyman to join a Fly In / Fly Out rotation to the Menihek region in Labrador, near Schefferville, QC. Primary duties include maintenance and improvement of camp facilities, reading blueprints, and building with wood and light steel.

Responsibilities include safety-focused on-site work, layout preparation, measuring and joining materials, and assisting with cost estimates. Must have class 5 license and carpentry experience; own tools required.

Qualifications

• Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and sketches to determine specs.
• Measure, cut, shape, assemble and join materials (wood, wood substitutes, light steel).
• Maintain, repair and renovate residences and structures on site.

• Assist with cost estimates for upcoming jobs.
• Work independently with excellent time management.
• Assist with inventory of tools and materials and notify supervisor when quantities drop.

Job description

Tata Steel Minerals Canada is currently seeking a Carpenter/Journeyman to join their highly skilled team to work a Fly In / Fly Out rotation to and from the Menihek region in Labrador, near the town of Schefferville QC. Main pick-up points are St. John's, Gander, Deer Lake and Wabush (NL) as well as Halifax/Charlo and Montreal/Quebec City.

Reporting to the Essential Services Supervisor, the Carpenter/journeyman will actively participate in the maintenance and improvement of primarily camp facilities.

Responsibilities

• Strong Safety focus while working on site
• Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and sketches to determine specifications and calculate requirements for projects
• Prepare layouts in conformance to building codes, specifications provided by engineering
• Measure, cut, shape, assemble and join materials made of wood, wood substitutes, lightweight steel, and other materials
• Build foundations, install floor beams, lay subflooring and erect walls and roof systems
• Fit and install trim items, such as doors, stairs, moulding and hardware,
• Maintain, repair, and renovate residences and wooden structures on site or in town
• May assist the supervisor with cost estimates for upcoming jobs
• Work independently with excellent time management skills are required
• Assist with inventory of tools and materials on site and notify supervisor when quantities drop below desired levels

Requirements

• Must be able to work at heights in an outdoor environment in all seasons
• Current Newfoundland and Labrador Fall Arrest certification would also be considered an asset
• Class 5 license, required
• Millwright experience with some scaffolding/carpentry experience
• AWP Certification would be considered an asset

These skills and abilities would normally be acquired over the years in reaching Journey person status in the Carpentry field. All carpenters are expected to have their own small tools, tool belts with them upon hire and larger items will be provided by the company for use at site.
