Responsibilities

  • Set up, move, maintain and cleanup furniture and equipment for Residence and Conference Services events.
  • Perform housekeeping turnovers and custodial duties including cleaning and sanitizing spaces, restocking supplies, and waste management.
  • Report hazards, malfunctions or security concerns to supervisor or security personnel.
  • Perform general building maintenance including lamp replacement, floor care, and snow/ice removal at entrances and exits.
  • Comply with Occupational Health & Safety Act and university health and safety standards.

Job description

The caretaker, who reports to the Residence Services Manager is responsible for providing support across Residence Services through general maintenance, cleaning, and housekeeping duties. This position helps maintain a clean, safe, functional and welcoming environment for students, staff, conference guests and visitors by supporting the day-to-day operation of residence and conference facilities. The Caretaker performs custodial, housekeeping, event setup, and general maintenance tasks while ensuring work is completed in accordance with established procedures, health and safety legislations, and University Standards.

Responsibilities
  • Participate in the setup, movement, maintenance and cleanup of furniture, equipment and conference locations for Residence and Conference Services functions, indoors and outdoors, on and off Campus based on Action Sheets and Work Orders.
  • Perform housekeeping turnovers for hotel/suite-style accommodations and complete custodial duties including cleaning, dusting, washing and sanitizing Residence and conference spaces, replenishing supplies, removing refuse and maintaining waste containers and disposal units.
  • Promptly report fire, vandalism, major hazards, repairs, alterations, service malfunctions for assignment and other matters of an irregular nature to supervisor or security personnel.
  • Perform general building maintenance including replacing burned-out lamps, maintaining floors using appropriate equipment, and assisting with snow and ice removal from assigned entrances and emergency exits.
  • Work in compliance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act, WHMIS Regulation, applicable health and health and safety related legislation and standards and with such workplace practices as outlined by the immediate supervisor and perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Experience in custodial work, including knowledge of recognized custodial practices, safe work habits and techniques.
  • Must have a good work record, including reliability, attendance and punctuality.
  • Must have the ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the job, including heavy manual work, working at heights, and carrying out general maintenance functions and equipment maintenance.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must have current WHMIS training (or must successfully complete training during trial/probation period) and familiarity with the Occupational Health & Safety Act and other applicable health and safety legislation and standards.
  • Ability to maintain a professional image and deal courteously with staff, students, clients and the general public.
