RINA is currently recruiting for a Canada Marine Surveyor to join its office in Montreal within the North America Marine Division.

Mission

The Marine Surveyor will be responsible for conducting inspections, assessments, and surveys of vessels, marine equipment, and offshore structures to ensure compliance with international maritime regulations, classification society rules, and client-specific requirements. Leveraging their marine engineering expertise, the surveyor will evaluate the condition, safety, and operational efficiency of marine assets, providing detailed reports and recommendations to stakeholders.

Key Accountabilities

Vessel Inspections and Surveys:

  • Conduct various types of surveys on vessels, dry dock, offshore or warehouse on behalf of P & I, H & M, Owner, Charterer, Stevedores, Freight forwarder etc.
  • Conduct flag state inspections for assigned administrations.
  • Conduct condition surveys, pre-purchase inspections, draft surveys, bunker surveys, and damage assessments of vessels, including H & M.
  • Perform machinery surveys, including main engines, auxiliary engines, boilers, pumps, and other mechanical systems.
  • Conduct pre-delivery inspections for newbuild vessels to ensure compliance with specifications and contractual requirements.
  • Perform on-hire and off-hire surveys for charter parties, P & I, Insurances, Charterer etc. & documenting the condition of the vessel and equipment.
Qualifications
  • Degree or diploma in Marine Engineering or a related field.
  • Valid 2nd Engineer or Chief Engineer Certificate of Competency (STCW).
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in marine engineering, preferably with sea-going experience as a 2nd Engineer or Chief Engineer.
  • In-depth understanding of marine propulsion systems, auxiliary machinery, and electrical systems.
  • Familiarity with classification society rules (e.g., Lloyd’s Register, ABS, DNV) and international maritime regulations (e.g., SOLAS, MARPOL).
  • Verify compliance with International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations, classification society rules (e.g., Lloyd’s Register, ABS, DNV), and flag state requirements.
  • Conduct surveys for specific purposes, such as bunker quantity surveys, draft surveys, project cargo surveys, towage approval, and cargo suitability inspections.
  • Perform risk assessments for offshore installations, including drilling rigs and floating production units.
  • Assess the operational condition of marine engines, propulsion systems, and auxiliary machinery.
  • Evaluate maintenance records and machinery performance to identify potential issues or areas for improvement.
  • Provide technical advice on repairs, maintenance, and upgrades to ensure optimal performance and compliance.
  • Investigate and assess damage to vessels, machinery, and equipment due to accidents, collisions, grounding, or other incidents.
  • Determine the cause, extent, and cost of damage, and provide recommendations for repairs.
  • Collaborate with insurers, owners, and repair yards to resolve claims and disputes.
  • Prepare detailed survey reports, including findings, recommendations, and photographic evidence.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, surveys, and correspondence with clients and stakeholders.
  • Provide technical input for insurance claims, risk assessments, and condition evaluations.
  • Ensure vessels comply with international safety standards, environmental regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Identify potential safety hazards and recommend corrective actions to mitigate risks.
  • Stay updated on changes in maritime regulations, classification society rules, and industry trends.
  • Liaise with shipowners, operators, insurers, and legal representatives to provide expert advice and support.
  • Assist clients in understanding survey findings and implementing recommended actions.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, ensuring high levels of customer satisfaction.
  • Proficiency in reading technical drawings, manuals, and specifications.


Preferred Attributes:

  • Certification as a Marine Surveyor (e.g., ICS Marine Surveying Certification) is an advantage.
  • Experience with oil and gas tankers, bulk carriers, or offshore support vessels is desirable.
  • Knowledge of risk management and insurance principles.
  • Proficiency in using survey tools, software, and diagnostic equipment.
