Job summary

Parks Canada is seeking a Built Heritage Advisor to protect and conserve Canada's federally designated historic places. You will provide expert guidance, review documentation, and participate in committees to align projects with the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada.

You will deliver training, support national heritage programs, and help steward sites like National Historic Sites, Heritage Buildings, and heritage lighthouses.

Duties

Join Parks Canada’s Federal Built Heritage team and play a vital role in protecting some of the country’s most significant federally designated historic places. As a Built Heritage Advisor, you will provide expert guidance on the conservation of Canada’s built heritage, along with training and interpretation of the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada. Your work will directly support the stewardship of a diverse portfolio that includes National Historic Sites, Federal Heritage Buildings, Heritage Lighthouses, Heritage Railway Stations, and World Heritage Sites. DutiesProvide expert advice and guidance on conservation approaches for federally recognized historic places, including participation on committees. Review architectural and technical documentation related to conservation projects. Ensure alignment with the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada. Education

ED1: Graduation with a degree in Architecture from a recognized post-secondary institution.

Experience

• EXP1: Recent* and significant** experience applying architectural heritage conservation standards and guidelines. Recent experience is defined as experience acquired within the last ten (10) years. Significant experience is defined as experience that is equivalent in depth and breadth to the performance of full-time duties over a period of approximately three (3) years or more.


• EXP2: Experience providing detailed heritage conservation advice to decision makers (e.g. clients and/or management).

Applied / assessed at a later date

Knowledge:

• K1: Knowledge of conservation best practices for built heritage (such as buildings, engineering works, cultural landscapes, archaeological sites) including the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada.


• K2: Knowledge of historic construction methods in the Canadian context, including materials and techniques used to conserve built heritage.

Abilities

• A1: Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.


• A2: Ability to collect, organize, analyze, and present complex information, as well as summarize and substantiate decisions in a clear and concise fashion.
