Job summary

The Drake Hotel Properties is seeking an experienced Building Maintenance Technician to care for a historic and modern mix of spaces. You will troubleshoot guestroom HVAC, repair millwork, address plumbing issues and perform preventive maintenance, working with the Facilities Manager and hotel teams to ensure safety and guest comfort.

As a multi-skilled generalist, you will repair, inspect and maintain systems across the Classic and Modern Wings, communicate clearly, and deliver timely,

Qualifications

• At least three years of hands-on building maintenance experience in a hotel, restaurant, or similar property.
• Solid generalist skills across mechanical, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, drywall and painting.
• Experience with hospitality systems is an asset and safety training such as WHMIS is welcome.
• Good judgement, reliability and ability to work independently while staying connected to the team.

Responsibilities

• Care for the whole property across the Classic and Modern Wings, including guestrooms, public areas, restaurants, bars, kitchens and event spaces.
• Handle plumbing repairs, basic electrical work, HVAC troubleshooting, carpentry and related tasks within safe scope.
• Inspect areas, document issues, and perform repairs to guest-ready standards.
• Complete preventive maintenance and update work orders, communicating delays or parts needs.
• Be a first responder for equipment and kitchen issues and coordinate with outside trades when needed.
• Maintain safety, follow procedures, and support seasonal work and events.

Use your craft to care for a building with history, modern systems and a lot of hospitality happening inside of it.

This is an experienced, hands‑on hospitality maintenance role for a strong building generalist who takes pride in both the repair and the experience around it.

The Drake has long been part of Queen West: a hotel, restaurants and bars, a gathering place, a stage and, for many people, a local institution. The building itself is part of what guests and the community come here to experience.

The Classic Wing has history, character and the quirks of an older property. The newer Modern Wing adds contemporary rooms, equipment, controls and infrastructure. For someone who likes to understand how buildings really work, there is always more to learn.

Good hotel maintenance is hospitality. It means repairing something safely, cleanly and thoughtfully while a guest is settling in, a kitchen is preparing for service or an event team is working toward doors-open.

We are looking for an experienced Building Maintenance Technician who enjoys variety and takes ownership. You might troubleshoot guestroom HVAC, repair millwork before dinner service, stop a plumbing issue from growing or complete preventive maintenance. Working with the Facilities Manager and hotel teams, you will understand the problem, fix it properly, communicate clearly and care for the people using the space while you do it.

What you will do

Care For The Whole Property.

Complete hands‑on maintenance and repairs across the Classic and Modern Wings, including guestrooms, public areas, restaurants, bars, kitchens, event spaces and back‑of‑house.

Use more than one skill.

Handle plumbing repairs, basic electrical work, HVAC troubleshooting, drywall, painting, caulking, carpentry, doors, locks, hardware, fixtures, furniture and millwork within your training and safe scope.

Look after the details.

Inspect rooms and operating areas, spot deficiencies early, respect the character of the property and complete repairs to a clean, guest‑ready standard.

Do preventive work that matters.

Complete scheduled maintenance on building systems, equipment, filters, fixtures, guestrooms and operating areas; record what you found and what you did.

Be a smart first responder.

Assess equipment, mechanical and commercial kitchen issues, stabilize situations safely and escalation to the right qualified trade when specialist work is required.

Respond with hospitality.

Handle guest and team maintenance requests promptly, professionally and with empathy for what is happening around the repair.

Finish the loop.

Update work orders, communicate delays or parts needs, and make sure temporary fixes are not forgotten.

Support outside trades.

Provide access and useful context, monitor work in occupied areas, care for tools and supplies, and leave work and storage areas safe and ready.

Work safely.

Follow health and safety, fire/life‑safety, PPE, lockout/tag‑out and company procedures, and report hazards or incidents promptly.

Pitch in.

Support seasonal work, event needs, small improvement projects and other practical priorities that come with a busy hotel and food + beverage operation.

You diagnose before replacing parts and fix the cause, not only the symptom.

Your work is safe, durable and tidy; you are curious about older building fabric and newer controls and keep learning the property.

You know the difference between a repair you can own and work that requires a licensed specialist.

You communicate early when a repair needs time, parts, access or outside help.

You stay calm around guests and busy teams, communicate early and notice small deficiencies before they become large ones.

What you bring

At least three years of hands‑on building maintenance experience in a hotel, restaurant, commercial, institutional, multi‑residential or similarly active property.

Solid generalist skills and practical troubleshooting ability across mechanical, basic electrical, HVAC, carpentry, drywall, painting and building hardware.

Experience with hotel rooms, commercial kitchens, laundry equipment, boilers, refrigeration or other hospitality systems is an asset.

Good judgement, reliability and the ability to work independently while staying connected to the team.

A service mindset, clear communication and comfort using a work‑order system, email and basic digital tools.

Trade training, a licence or relevant certification is welcome, but a capable multi‑skilled generalist with sound judgement can be just as valuable. WHMIS and safety training are assets.

Flexible availability, including evenings, early mornings, weekends and holidays, plus participation in a reasonable on‑call or emergency rotation.

Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, lift up to 20 kg, climb ladders and stairs, and work safely in maintenance areas. A valid Ontario driver's licence is an asset.
