Job summary

Carmens Group is seeking a Building Maintenance professional to join our team at the Hamilton Convention Centre. This role reports to the Director of Operations and works as part of the IUOE 772 union, focusing on maintenance and event support.

Responsibilities include maintaining HVAC and building systems, logging equipment data, and ensuring safety and compliance. The position requires multi-skilled trades experience and flexibility for varied shifts, including nights and weekends.

Qualifications

• 3–5 years’ experience in building maintenance or similar role.
• Experience in plumbing, building repair and carpentry; some electrical knowledge preferred.
• Experience in convention centres, sports/entertainment, or hospitality environment preferred.
• Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
• Current tickets for Skyjack, forklift, boom lift and fall arrest are assets.
• Ability to solder copper for plumbing repairs.
• Ability to lift 50 lbs and work at heights.

Responsibilities

• Maintain, operate, and repair HVAC, mechanical and plumbing equipment, refrigeration systems, cooling towers, boilers, water pumps, and building control systems.
• Complete daily equipment logs for ice machines, refrigerators, freezers, and other equipment.
• Ensure all work complies with relevant codes and specifications.
• Advise management when equipment hazard or should not operate.
• Coordinate event delivery and monitor or direct contractors’ work within Operations.
• Plan facility maintenance and operations; identify problems; monitor workflow; review projects and procedures.
• Track work and complete work orders as assigned.
• Perform other tasks as assigned.

Job description

Hamilton Convention Centre is looking to add a Building Maintenance person to join our team. This position will be part of the IUOE 772 Union, comprised of Maintenance and Electrician members, and will report to the Director of Operations for Hamilton Convention Centre.

This position averages 24 hours per week and pays an hourly rate of $41.39, in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement. Benefits are provided as per the union agreement.

This position will remain open until October 9, 2026.

Description

• Responsible for maintenance, operations, and repairs, including HVAC, mechanical and plumbing equipment, refrigeration equipment systems, cooling towers, boilers, water pumps, and building control systems.
• Ensure daily equipment logs are completed for ice machines, refrigerators, freezers, and other equipment to support proper operations, and make repairs when necessary.
• Ensure all work is completed in accordance with relevant codes and specifications.
• Advise management when equipment presents a hazard or should not continue operating.
Ensure safe and efficient work procedures are followed.Participate in the delivery of events; coordinate arrangements within the Operations department, with contractors and clients; and monitor or direct the work of contractors on building projects.Participate in work planning for facility maintenance and operations; identify and resolve problems; monitor workflow; and review and evaluate work projects, methods, and procedures.
• Track work and complete work orders as assigned.
• Perform other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

• 3–5 years’ experience in a similar role required.
• Experience in plumbing, building repair, and carpentry work, with some knowledge of electrical systems strongly preferred.
• Experience in a convention centre, sports and entertainment, or hospitality environment strongly preferred.
• High school diploma or equivalent required. Must possess a valid driver’s licence and a good driving record.
• Current, up-to-date tickets for Skyjack, forklift, boom lift, and fall arrest are an asset.
• Must have experience with oxy-acetylene torches.
• Must be able to solder copper for plumbing repairs.
• Must have experience using woodshop power tools, such as table saws, mitre saws, drill presses, sanders, reciprocating saws, and various hand tools.
• Ability to repair doors, hinges, and locks is required.
• Knowledge of fire control panels and wet and dry systems is an asset.
• Ability to lift 50 lbs. and climb ladders is required. Must be able to be fitted for respirator equipment and have significant experience with power and hand tools.
• Familiarity with OSHA requirements.
• Ability to work independently and under minimal supervision.
• Must be available to work varied shifts as necessary, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
