Reporting to Facilities Management, the role emphasizes safety, code compliance, on-call readiness, and accurate maintenance documentation while supporting daily operations and project work.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Grade 12 diploma required.
  • 3 years of experience as a certified electrician.
  • Valid Ontario Certificate of Qualification (309A).
  • Valid MTO Class G driver\'s license and driving record.
  • Experience with MS Office (Outlook, Excel, Word).

Responsibilities

  • Assist supervisors with electrical system design for renovations (lights, power, electric heat).
  • Follow lockout/tagout procedures to prevent accidental access to electrical power sources during maintenance.
  • Read and interpret electrical diagrams and blueprints; specify components and operation.
  • Determine type, size and quantity of system components.
  • Initiate work and complete tasks; prepare reports and track expenses.
  • Assist and/or monitor work by outside contractors when required.
  • Maintain and update equipment files and records.
  • Assist in commissioning of new or repaired equipment in facilities.
  • Inspect installations or repairs for conformance to specifications.
  • Participate in asset management data collection and reporting.

Overview

The City of Kitchener is seeking a skilled and licensed Electrician to support the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of City-owned facilities. Reporting to Facilities Management, this position is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical systems across a diverse portfolio of municipal buildings. The Electrician plays a key role in daily operations, performing both preventative and reactive maintenance to ensure electrical infrastructure, distribution systems, and related equipment remain fully operational and compliant. This includes diagnosing faults, responding to service requests and emergencies, and completing planned maintenance programs to minimize downtime and extend asset life. Duties include maintaining and repairing electrical distribution systems, lighting, control equipment, and building systems; conducting inspections and testing to ensure safety and code compliance; reading and interpreting drawings and specifications; and maintaining accurate maintenance records. Working independently and as part of a broader facilities team, the Electrician prioritizes and responds to work orders, supports ongoing facility operations, and contributes to a safe, accessible, and well-maintained environment for staff and the community.

Responsibilities
  • Assists supervisors and project managers with electrical system design for renovations (lights, power, electric heat).
  • Follows lockout/tagout procedures to prevent accidental or unauthorized access to electrical power sources that are undergoing maintenance or other work.
  • Draws diagrams of electrical process, specifies components, location and operation based on knowledge of electrical standards, building code, and fire regulations.
  • Determines type, size, and quantity of system components.
  • Initiates work and follows through to job completion, including site clean-up; reports any conditions which should be investigated or corrected because of work carried out or observations made; prepares reports as required; tracks expenses to associated work and completes paperwork.
  • Assist and/or monitor work performed by outside contractors when required.
  • Maintain and/or assist in the updating of equipment files and records.
  • Assist in the commissioning of new, reconditioned, or repaired equipment in existing and new facilities.
  • Inspect installation or repairs performed by outside contractors for conformance to specifications.
  • Must participate in asset management plans and data collection as required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education
  • Minimum Grade 12 diploma.
Experience
  • Minimum 3 years experience as a certified electrician.
  • Experience with Microsoft office suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, Onenote, Teams).
Additional Requirements
  • Must have a valid MTO Class "G" driver's license in good standing.
  • Must provide current drivers abstract.
  • Must have a Province of Ontario Certificate of Qualification (The Apprenticeship and Tradesmen’s Qualification Act). Minimum Construction and Maintenance Electrician (309A).
  • May be required to participate in regular on-call schedule.
  • Must be able to work various shifts to accommodate work schedules or special projects.
  • Must successfully complete required progressional criteria as it relates to this job.
  • Photocopies of certificates and licenses will be required at time of interview.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Knowledge of the Ontario Hydro Electrical Safety Code Standards/ESA standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret electrical diagrams and blue prints.
  • Proven ability to recognize hazardous situations and exercise extreme caution and good judgment when working in and around electrical equipment, machinery, and other related equipment.
  • Knowledge of various electrical systems; use and maintenance of trade specific materials, tools, instrumentation, and equipment; applicable building and safety code requirements; methods and practices followed in the maintenance of tools, machinery, and equipment; safety precautions to be observed in the maintenance and installation of electrical systems, devices, and fixtures as per Ontario Electrical Code.

  • Must be able to work with minimum supervision.
