General Description

Under general supervision, the Electrician performs skilled journeyperson level work. The work involves preventative and corrective maintenance, inspections, modifications, and installing/dismantling of systems and projects, as well as troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing municipal equipment. The incumbent will be responsible for inspecting the work of contractors, demonstrating sound judgement, and working toward reducing errors to prevent unsafe and deteriorated equipment, health and safety risks to the public, and liabilities to the municipality. This position is required to exercise a considerable degree of independent judgement, although the work is subject to inspection

Responsibilities
  • Perform corrective and preventative maintenance, repairs, alterations, and installations of various electrical systems, components, and equipment.
  • Respond to, troubleshoot, and find solutions for complex and unique issues with various types of equipment and systems relating to the trade.
  • Read and interpret electrical, mechanical, and architectural drawings, and electrical code specifications to determine wiring layouts.
  • Install conduits, cables, other types of electrical conductor enclosures, and fittings and pull wire through conduits.
  • Install cabling, distribution, and control equipment such as PLC’s, VFD’s, MCC’s, SCADA Network, switches, relays, circuit breaker panels, and fuse enclosures.
  • Install data cabling.
  • Splice, join, and connect wire to form circuits and test circuits to ensure integrity and safety.
  • Set up electrical requirements for special events, ensuring public safety, as required.
  • Operate various equipment related to the trade.
  • Participate in development of trade related preventative maintenance tasks and procedures.
  • Participate actively as a team member and support various health and safety, energy conservation, and operational cost effectiveness initiatives.
  • Provide input into technical data, specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Strictly comply with various quality, electrical codes, related regulations, and standards.
  • Complete field level hazard assessments (FLHAs) and incident reports as necessary.
  • Identify and purchase parts and supplies using department policies for guidance.
  • Maintain various manuals, blueprints, and facility/field logbooks as required.
  • Complete and maintain accurate records and reports and provide written notes and feedback on work orders or other forms of communication.
  • Respond to call outs and emergencies as required.
  • Provide guidance, instruction, and direction to assigned helpers or apprentices as required.
  • Complete training and participate in the RMWB training program as required by operations.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Considerable knowledge of the standard methods, practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in the electrical trade, specifically to commercial/industrial maintenance industry.
  • Extensive knowledge about, and experience working within, the Canadian Electrical Code, and all other applicable rules and codes governing installations.
  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade and the ability to implement safe work practices, including, but not limited to, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Basic computer skills and experience working with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and various programs/systems common in the trade are required.
  • Ability to understand and execute verbal and written instructions, read and interpret blueprints, manuals, plans, and specifications.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative, collaborative, and productive work relationships.
  • Ability to set priorities and respond to emergency situations.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Proficient math, numeracy, and reading skills.
Education And Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.
  • Certified Journeyperson in the trade of Electrician.
  • Three (3) years of electrical journeyperson experience in commercial/industrial operations are required.
  • Dual tickets are considered an asset.
  • Industrial training in Confined Space, Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO), Safe Work Permitting & H2S awareness are considered assets.
Other Requirements
  • Submission of a Criminal Record Check.
  • The ability to acquire and maintain a RCMP enhanced reliability clearance is required for those working within the RCMP Support Services.
  • A valid Class Five (5) Operator’s License is required as incumbent will be required to operate a personal or municipal vehicle for business use on a regular basis.
  • Must be willing to work outside in all conditions.
  • Immunizations are strongly recommended for work in unsanitary conditions.
  • Must be medically and physically able to perform all duties of the position on an ongoing basis.
  • Working from a variety of locations within the municipality, the incumbent may be required to travel and stay for several days (including overnight) in remote locations.
  • Work may be completed in cramped, restricted, and confined spaces, as well as from ladders, scaffolds, and aerial work platforms.
