Position: Birthday Party Host

Reports to: Visitor Experience Managers

Science World is a mission-based, charitable organization that supports the development of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Design and Math) literacy across British Columbia. As a facility, Science World is generally open to the public seven days a week, with some extended evening hours in the summer months. Typical office hours are Monday to Friday 8:00am – 5:30pm, with front-facing and operational teams also working a variety of shifts including weekends, holidays and evenings. Hours of work and other related requirements will be scheduled according to business needs, and this may include special events on evenings, weekends and holidays.

Position Description:

The Birthday Party Host, reporting to the Visitor Experience Managers, will be responsible for facilitating friendly, fun, awesome, ‘wow’, memorable birthday parties at Science World. Birthday parties are themed, age-appropriate for children ages 3-12 and are delivered with our signature Science World flair. The Birthday Party Hosts enthusiasm and inspiration will make every birthday child’s party an unforgettable experience!

With a focus on customer service driven team player, the Birthday Party Host will be excited to provide our visitors with an unforgettable, educational and seamless Birthday Party experience. The Hosts are responsible for providing a safe, clean and secure environment and they must be comfortable working with colleagues in different departments to help meet Science World’s shared goals. The Birthday Party Host must take a positive, solution-focused approach to daily tasks, and work as an engaged and collaborative team player.

Responsibilities:

• Provide birthday party attendees with friendly, responsive service
• Provide birthday party attendees with a fun, awesome, wow, memorable “out of home” experience
• Ensure a safe, clean, secure environment for birthday party attendees
• Decorate and prepare party rooms, greet party guests, and respond to their needs
• Facilitate age-appropriate birthday party activities and games
• Ensure sufficient party supplies are available and in working order
• Ensure smooth and timely transitions between parties
• Communicate changes in guest count and food orders
• Perform proficient operation of our ticketing and registration system (Advance Ticket Management System) with the processing and receipt of birthday party fees
• Assist in smooth operation of all ancillary services
• Operate within the philosophy, culture and values of Science World
• Perform other related duties as required to fulfill any changing business needs of this role

Qualifications:

• Must be responsible, self-motivated, and enthusiastic
• Ability to be flexible, adapt to unexpected situations, and multitask
• Demonstrated ability to work well with children and their adults
• Excellent communication skills and ability to work under strict time constraints
• Previous experience working in customer service, or other relevant experience
• Proven ability to speak and present before audiences of varying size and composition
• Experience using cash registers, ticket terminals, computerized sales systems, databases, and Microsoft Office considered an asset
• Must be available to work64 hours per month, including Saturdays and Sundays, and occasional weekday evenings
• Must be physically able to safely lift at least 12 kg

Important Availability Commitment:

This position requires maintaining an availability of at least 64 hours per month. Shifts are generally Saturdays and Sundays and may include some weekday evenings for training purposes. Shifts are assigned weekly, and hours depend on the number of parties booked per week.

This is a unionized position represented by CUPE 1004. The compensation rate is $21.38/hour.

After successfully completing probation, will be eligible to join the Voluntary RRSP/TFSA Plan and receive paid time off (sick, wellness days).
