Job summary

CMHC in Canada seeks a Bilingual Specialist, Multi-Unit Underwriter, Housing Program to support the construction of rental housing projects and the scaling of affordable housing solutions across Canada.

The role covers underwriting and client relations, with a focus on financial viability, risk management, and adherence to program policies. This is a temporary full-time role with hybrid office locations across major Canadian cities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in real estate, business, accounting, finance or commerce, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in construction financing, real estate, financial markets or credit risk analysis for multi-unit properties.
  • Experience reviewing, evaluating, prioritizing, and approving loans, including assessing financial viability.
  • Ability to research issues, analyze problems, synthesize information and make recommendations.
  • Ability to manage sensitive files using critical thinking and judgement.
  • Strong working relationships and communication skills in English and French.

Responsibilities

  • Apply sound judgement and make recommendations based on complex financial analysis.
  • Maintain quality relationships with clients to understand needs and explore opportunities.
  • Act as a direct lender under ACLP or BCH funding initiatives: review, underwrite, prioritize and approve loan applications.
  • Conduct detailed financial analysis and make underwriting recommendations.
  • Manage risk through prudence and due diligence in underwriting and approvals.
  • Collaborate with clients, stakeholders, and government levels offering advice and solutions.
  • Prepare underwriting reports, assess findings, and negotiate terms within CMHC policy.

About the role

Join CMHC as a Bilingual Specialist, Multi-Unit Underwriter, Housing Program and play a key role in advancing housing solutions across Canada. In these roles, you will use your financial and underwriting expertise along with your client relationship skills to support the construction of new rental housing projects, including large scale developments and initiatives that contribute to the development and scaling of affordable housing solutions.

This is for multiple temporary positions of a duration ranging from 18 to 24 months.

What you’ll do:
  • Apply sound judgement and decision-making practices based on complex financial analysis while making recommendations.
  • Maintain quality relationships with clients to understand their needs, objectives, and explore opportunities.
  • Act as a direct lender under the ACLP program or under BCH’s funding initiatives: review, underwrite, prioritize and approve loan applications while assessing financial viability and adherence to the program’s policies and operational procedures.
  • Conduct detailed financial analysis and make recommendations for full underwriting.
  • Manage risk by exercising prudence and due diligence while reviewing, underwriting, assessing and approving applications.
  • Work in partnership with clients, stakeholders, and various levels of government by offering advice, support and alternative solutions.
  • Prepare underwriting reports, assess findings, and negotiate terms to ensure alignment with CMHC’s operational policy and approval authority.
What you should have:
  • An undergraduate degree in a relevant field related to real estate such as business administration, accounting, finance or commerce, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in construction financing, real estate, financial markets or credit risk analysis for Multi-Unit properties.
  • Demonstrated experience reviewing, evaluating, prioritizing, and approving loans, including assessing financial viability.
  • The ability to research issues, analyze problems, synthesize information and make recommendations.
  • The ability to manage files and issues (sensitive in nature) using critical thinking and judgement.
  • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Solid oral and written communication skills in both official languages (English and French) , with the ability to clearly convey decisions and address objections.
It would be great if you also had:
  • Experience or knowledge in property management, real estate appraisal, property inspection, project monitoring or development, or real estate law is considered an asset.
  • Successful completion of a professional association designation such as CRF, AACI, CFA, or CPM.
  • Experience in building reports and/or in using statistical analysis software such as MS Excel.
