Job summary

CMHC is seeking a Bilingual Specialist, Multi-Unit Underwriter, Housing Program, with experience in underwriting and housing finance to support construction of rental housing projects across Canada.

Positions are temporary (18–24 months) and hybrid, involving collaboration with clients and government partners on ACLP and BCH initiatives.

Qualifications

  • An undergraduate degree in a real estate related field such as business administration, accounting, finance or commerce.
  • Five years of experience in construction financing, real estate, financial markets or credit risk analysis for multi-unit properties.
  • Experience reviewing, evaluating, prioritizing, and approving loans, including assessing financial viability.
  • Ability to research issues, analyze problems, synthesize information, and make recommendations.
  • Ability to manage files and issues using critical thinking and judgement.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Bilingual in English and French with strong written and oral communication.

Responsibilities

  • Apply sound judgement and make recommendations based on complex financial analysis.
  • Maintain quality relationships with clients to understand needs and opportunities.
  • Act as a direct lender under ACLP or BCH funding initiatives, review and approve loan applications while adhering to policies.
  • Conduct detailed financial analysis and underwriting recommendations.
  • Manage risk with due diligence while reviewing and approving applications.
  • Collaborate with clients, stakeholders and government with advisory support and solutions.
  • Prepare underwriting reports and negotiate terms aligned with CMHC policies.

About The Role

Join CMHC as a Bilingual Specialist, Multi-Unit Underwriter, Housing Program and play a key role in advancing housing solutions across Canada. Opportunities are available within the Apartment Construction Loan Program (ACLP) and other housing program teams. In these roles, you will use your financial and underwriting expertise along with your client relationship skills to support the construction of new rental housing projects, including large scale developments and initiatives that contribute to the development and scaling of affordable housing solutions.

This is for multiple temporary positions of a duration ranging from 18 to 24 months.

What You'll Do
  • Apply sound judgement and decision-making practices based on complex financial analysis while making recommendations.
  • Maintain quality relationships with clients to understand their needs, objectives, and explore opportunities.
  • Act as a direct lender under the ACLP program or under BCH’s funding initiatives: review, underwrite, prioritize and approve loan applications while assessing financial viability and adherence to the program's policies and operational procedures.
  • Conduct detailed financial analysis and make recommendations for full underwriting.
  • Manage risk by exercising prudence and due diligence while reviewing, underwriting, assessing and approving applications.
  • Work in partnership with clients, stakeholders, and various levels of government by offering advice, support and alternative solutions.
  • Prepare underwriting reports, assess findings, and negotiate terms to ensure alignment with CMHC’s operational policy and approval authority.
What You Should Have
  • An undergraduate degree in a relevant field related to real estate such as business administration, accounting, finance or commerce, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in construction financing, real estate, financial markets or credit risk analysis for Multi-Unit properties.
  • Demonstrated experience reviewing, evaluating, prioritizing, and approving loans, including assessing financial viability.
  • The ability to research issues, analyze problems, synthesize information and make recommendations.
  • The ability to manage files and issues (sensitive in nature) using critical thinking and judgement.
  • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Solid oral and written communication skills in both official languages (English and French) , with the ability to clearly convey decisions and address objections.
It Would Be Great If You Also Had
  • Experience or knowledge in property management, real estate appraisal, property inspection, project monitoring or development, or real estate law is considered an asset.
  • Successful completion of a professional association designation such as CRF, AACI, CFA, or CPM.
  • Experience in building reports and/or in using statistical analysis software such as MS Excel.
