Job summary

Umbrella Family and Child Centres of Hamilton is seeking a Before and After School Educator in Dundas, ON. This permanent, part-time role focuses on creating developmentally appropriate programs, supporting children’s transitions, providing healthy snacks, and ensuring safety and well-being.

You’ll supervise activities, engage children, and collaborate with colleagues in a welcoming, organized environment under a collective agreement.

Qualifications

• Early Childhood Education Diploma (ECE) or equivalent to obtain Director’s Approval to work alone with children.
• Experience in a childcare setting and ability to guide behaviour.
• Knowledge of How Does Learning Happen? and program planning for JK/SK and school-aged children.
• Strong problem-solving, communication and organizational skills; flexible with schedules.
• Passion for supporting children, families and colleagues in a team environment.

Responsibilities

• Greet children and families warmly and provide a welcoming environment.
• Support transitions from home to program, encouraging self-regulation and social engagement.
• Plan and implement activities using a programming cart of materials.
• Provide morning snacks and ensure safe handwashing and snack time.
• Supervise indoor/outdoor play and assist with daily routines.
• Follow How Does Learning Happen? guidelines in daily programming.

Location: Dundana Centre, 23 Dundana Ave, Dundas, ON L9H 4E5
Total Hours per Week: 27.75 with 1.5 hours programming time
Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:00am-9:15am 3:00pm-6:00pm
Pay Rate (per Collective Agreement, includes wage grants):
*RECE- $28.90 per hour
*Non RECE- $26.35
About the Role
As a Before and After School Educator, your primary responsibility is to be present for children and their families while developing and implementing programs that meet their developmental needs and interests. You will create meaningful play experiences, provide healthy snacks, supervise outdoor and indoor activities, and ensure the safety and well-being of children in your care.
Duties vary by centre, but your role always includes supporting children, assisting colleagues, and contributing to a welcoming and well-organized environment.
Qualifications

• Early Childhood Education Diploma (ECE) and member in good standing with the College of ECEs OR educational requirements to obtain Director’s Approval for working alone with children
• Related experience in a childcare setting
• Demonstrated knowledge and working ability to effectively interact with children requiring behavioural guidance
• Demonstrated knowledge of How Does Learning Happen?
• Experience in program planning and implementation for JK/SK and school-aged children
• Excellent problem-solving, interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
• Flexibility to adapt to a variety of responsibilities and schedules
• Passion for supporting children, families, and colleagues in a positive, team-focused environment

Certifications:

• Standard First Aid with CPR Level C
• Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Police Check
• Proof of up-to-date immunizations (TB, Tetanus, MMR)

Key Responsibilities:

• Greet children and families with warmth and professionalism
• Support children as they transition from home to program, including self-regulation and social engagement
• Engage children in meaningful activities using a programming cart of materials
• Provide morning snacks, ensuring children wash hands and eat safely
• Help children tidy up and prepare for their school day, including outdoor play as appropriate
• Set up and facilitate activities aligned with How Does Learning Happen?
• Supervise snack and ensure all children eat safely
• Provide indoor and outdoor play opportunities and support children’s interests
• Monitor children’s behaviour, offering guidance and support as needed
