Job summary

Johnson Electric in Ancaster, ON is seeking an experienced Automation Systems Designer-Mechanical to analyze, conceptualize, and design production automation solutions for robotic cells and assembly lines. This role requires a 3+ year hands-on background and a Mechanical Engineering degree.

You will collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and operations teams to produce SolidWorks drawings, verify components, and ensure safety standards across projects.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in automation design.
  • Experience with robotic cells and assembly systems is an asset.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks.

Responsibilities

  • Design mechanical systems for robots, assembly systems, production gauges, error proofs, and jigs.
  • Review drawings, material selection, machining techniques, and finishes.
  • Produce drawings and bills of materials in SolidWorks; support manufacturing during build and integration.
  • Collaborate with electrical designers and project team on requirements and standards.
  • Provide time estimates and progress updates to leadership; supervise junior designers.

Placement within the range will depend on the selected candidate's experience, skills, qualification, and overall assessment during the hiring process. This is not an entry level role and 3+ years of direct, hands-on work experience is required.As our next Automation Systems Designer-Mechanical, you’ll be responsible for analyzing, conceptualizing, and designing production automation solutions. Continuous development of innovative and advanced solutions will see engineering talents put to practical use as we empower our staff to try new ideas and put them to the test. Our projects vary in scope from simple material handling, fully automated product inspection cells, to complete pump assembly lines. Knowledge of a full range of motion methods (electrical, pneumatic) is essential, along with Design for Manufacture/Maintenance understanding.Why You’ll Love Working Here:Innovative Environment: Work on cutting-edge technologies and innovative projects that push the boundaries of what’s possible.Professional Growth: Opportunities for continuous learning and professional development through training programs and workshops.Collaborative Culture: A supportive and collaborative work environment where teamwork and knowledge sharing are encouraged.Competitive Compensation: Attractive salary packages and comprehensive benefits that reward your hard work and dedication.Global Presence: Be part of a global company with diverse teams and the opportunity to work on international projects.What You’ll Be Doing:Designing mechanical systems for robots, assembly systems, production gauges, error proofs, and assembly jigs.Analyzing engineering drawings and specifications to determine shape, dimensions, hardness, etc., in the development of equipment, processes, and products.Performing engineering calculations related to strength of materials, speeds, horsepower, temperature, pressure, force, etc.Ensuring designs and systems comply with applicable standards (e.g., machine safety, GAA, customer-specific).Reviewing electrical requirements with electrical designers and machine operations with the project team.Selecting appropriate components for mechanical assemblies and creating requisitions with delivery dates.Producing working drawings, detail drawings, and bills of materials using SolidWorks.Reviewing drawings for accuracy, material selection, proper machining techniques, finishes, hardness, etc.Assisting the manufacturing team by resolving issues during build, debug, and integration of projects.Communicating with customers, in-house technical and engineering staff, and vendors for technical information and specifications.Communicating design changes to the GAA team or respective manager.Providing time estimates, resource requirements, and progress updates to the Design Manager and Program Manager.Periodically supervising the mechanical design effort on a project level and delegating tasks to a team.Organizing documentation, including quotes, correspondence, requisitions, drawings, schedules, etc., on projects.Assisting in proposals and estimating mechanical design labor hours.Developing design and department standards.Overseeing Co-op students and Junior Designers on various projects.Adhering to all health and safety rules and procedures.Coordinating continuous improvement initiatives.Performing other related duties as required.What We’re Looking For:Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.3+ years of experience in special purpose equipment and/or automation design.Experience with robotic cells and assembly systems (an asset).Proficiency in SolidWorks.Working knowledge of common machine shop techniques (an asset).Strong ability to conceptualize and create solutions for complex design requirements.Thorough knowledge of pneumatic systems and electrical devices (e.g., switches, load cells, LVDTs).Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.Capability to give and take direction and work as part of a team.Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, at all levels of the organization.High level of integrity and dependability with a strong sense of urgency and results orientation.How to Apply:Apply online at www.johnsonelectric.com - We can’t wait to meet you!What we offer:Johnson Electric offers talented people like you the opportunity to grow professionally and personally, surrounded by some of the most dedicated, innovative, and entrepreneurial colleagues you will find anywhere.
