Job summary

Salit Steel is seeking an Assistant Health & Safety Manager to lead safety strategy across Ontario and Quebec steel fabrication facilities and active construction sites. You will minimize risk and embed a culture where safety is everyone's responsibility.

This succession role will position you to transition into Health & Safety Manager, working alongside current leadership with a clear pathway. Regular travel to sites for audits and safety governance is required.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of progressive H&S leadership in construction, steel fabrication, or heavy manufacturing.
• Post-secondary degree in Occupational Health and Safety or related field.
• Certifications: CRSP or NCSO preferred; COR Auditor a strong asset.
• Proven multi-site safety management across manufacturing and active civil/high-rise construction sites.
• Strong knowledge of BBS, JHA, crane/rigging safety.
• Experience with WSIB/CNESST processes.

Responsibilities

• Drive a company-wide safety culture where safety is a shared onus for every employee.
• Formulate, implement, and evaluate annual safety goals, SOPs, and Safe Work Practices through audits.
• Coach plant managers and site superintendents to lead safety talks, site inspections, and hazard reporting.
• Ensure compliance with Ontario OHS Act, Quebec CNESST/LSTT, WHMIS 2015, and CSA standards.
• Act as primary safety liaison for regulators (MLITSD, CNESST).
• Lead COR certification efforts and manage third-party compliance accounts (ISNetworld, Avetta, ComplyWorks).
• Oversee site safety plans (SSSPs), JHAs, and safety docs for bids and kick-offs.
• Oversee hazard assessments for high-risk operations (overhead cranes, rigging, heights).
• Direct root-cause investigations for injuries and near-misses; implement corrective actions.
• Partner on injury management with Claims team; support WSIB/CNESST claims.
• Travel to fabrication plants and active sites for audits and governance.
