Job description

HSE Leader

Location: Guelph, Ontario — Office-based with regular travel throughout Ontario

Description

As Peak Construction Group continues to build its team in Ontario, we’re looking for an HSE Leader who wants to take ownership and help shape how our safety programs grow. This is an opportunity to build on our existing foundation, bring forward ideas, and have a direct impact on safety practices, performance, and culture across our Eastern Canada operations.

Supported by the Director of HSE and the entire Ontario executive team, you’ll provide practical guidance and coaching to Construction Safety Officers and project teams, support consistent application of our Safety Management System, and lead improvements in incident management, training, compliance, and reporting. You’ll balance hands‑on support at project sites with developing the programs and processes needed to support a growing team.

There is room to make this role your own, with leadership support to help turn ideas into action. We’re looking for someone who sees what needs to be done, takes initiative, and wants to grow their contribution as our Ontario operations expand.

This role is based in our Guelph, Ontario office and requires regular travel to construction project sites and other company locations throughout the province.

Who You Are

You are an experienced HSE professional with a strong construction background and a practical, hands‑on approach to safety. You enjoy building relationships, coaching teams, and finding solutions that work in the field. You’re comfortable taking ownership, setting priorities, and following through. You want the opportunity to help build a team and shape its safety practices, with the accountability that comes with it.

Responsibilities
  • Safety Management Systems: Maintain, standardize, and continuously improve the company’s Safety Management System, ensuring consistent application of policies, procedures, safe work practices, and hazard assessments across projects.
  • Project Team Support: Provide technical guidance, coaching, and professional oversight to Construction Safety Officers and project teams. Visit sites regularly to support consistent safety practices, documentation, and regulatory compliance.
  • Incident Management & Compliance: Lead or support investigations into recordable incidents, serious near misses, and regulatory-reportable events, ensuring root causes are identified and corrective actions are implemented and closed.
  • Training & Competency Programs: Develop, administer, and monitor safety training, onboarding, and certification programs, ensuring required qualifications are tracked and maintained for employees and projects.
  • Monitoring, Reporting & Continuous Improvement: Track and analyze safety metrics, audit findings, and performance trends. Report results to leadership and work with teams to implement practical improvements.
  • Leadership & Safety Culture: Work closely with the Director of HSE and Ontario executive team to identify priorities, strengthen accountability, and build safety programs that support the growth of our Ontario operations.
Requirements
  • 7+ years of progressive HSE experience in construction, high-rise, or similar high-risk environments, with increasing responsibility across multiple projects.
  • Post‑secondary certificate or diploma in Occupational Health & Safety and recognized construction safety training.
  • Completion of ASTTBC Construction Safety Officer (CSO) or National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO), with practical application in active construction environments.
  • Professional safety designation such as CRSP, CSP, CHSC, or equivalent preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian OHS legislation, particularly Ontario requirements; U.S. OSHA exposure is an asset.
  • Proven experience implementing and managing HSE Management Systems, including policies, procedures, safe work practices, hazard assessments, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Experience coordinating incident investigations, safety training programs, and compliance activities.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to work from the Guelph office, with regular travel to construction project sites and other company locations throughout Ontario.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office and Microsoft 365 applications, including Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams, and Word, for data analysis, reporting, and safety documentation management.
  • First Aid, incident command, or emergency response experience.
  • Experience supporting workers’ compensation or claims management.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to build credibility and professional relationships across site teams and leadership.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize competing needs, exercise sound judgment, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Initiative and follow-through, with a willingness to take ownership and help develop safety practices as the organization grows.
  • Comfort balancing day‑to‑day site support with longer‑term program development and improvement.
