Area Maintenance Manager – Contract Position

The Pacific Western Group of Companies has an exciting new opportunity for an Area Maintenance Manager for the Student Transportation West Division. This is a temporary one year contract position, with the possibility of extension.

Overseeing northern Alberta, British Columbia and Yukon, this pivotal role requires close collaboration with General Managers, as well as direct engagement with Shop/Service Managers, Vehicle Maintenance Coordinators, Parts Managers, and other key maintenance personnel. The Area Maintenance Manager will also work cross-functionally with teams in operations, training, safety, finance, and beyond to ensure efficiency and effectiveness.

Reporting to the Vice President of Maintenance (Canada), the Area Maintenance Manager is responsible for developing and delivering a sustainable, reliable, and cost-effective fleet maintenance program. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in strategic planned maintenance and preventative maintenance within the transportation industry, along with experience leading personnel in an automated maintenance environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coach and lead division Maintenance Teams
  • Achieve financial objectives by preparing and adhering to an annual maintenance budget, scheduling expenditures, analyzing variances, and initiating corrective actions
  • Review, implement, and monitor the current maintenance program while striving for continuous improvements and identifying current and planning for future maintenance requirements
  • Manage key vendor accounts in the maintenance department, establishing preferential pricing, service agreements etc.
  • Lead strategic plans that align with broader Company strategy, while maintaining and enhancing internal and external working relationships
  • Ensure adherence to Preventative Maintenance (PM) programs and evaluate changes to PM inspection intervals, checklists etc. to improve fleet reliability an d reduce unplanned/unscheduled maintenance activities
  • Advise division management/maintenance teams on performance evaluations and management of maintenance employees
  • Ensure compliance with all Company, Department of Transportation, client and other applicable regulations, codes and standards, including shop employee comprehension and compliance with Company shop safety standards

Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree in business management or similar, with a specialization in transportation or vehicle maintenance and/or equivalent experience; Journeyperson Commercial Transport, Heavy Duty, or Automotive Technician or Journeyperson Parts Technician with previous responsibility for large fleet vehicle maintenance
  • Minimum 5 – 10 years of management/leadership experience within the transportation industry, specifically within a fleet maintenance environment
  • Comprehensive technical knowledge of proper mechanical procedures, methods, tools, and techniques necessary to effectively maintain a diverse fleet in terms of age and specification
  • Thorough knowledge of maintenance prevention, repair requirements as well as computerized vehicle maintenance programs and project management systems
  • Excellent planning, budgeting and human resources management skills
  • Successful responsibility and management of multiple maintenance facilities, and proven ability to facilitate maintenance department growth/development
  • Possess proficient computer skills in MS Office Suite
  • Must have strong organizational skills including time management/project planning, including managing a high volume of daily emails, phone calls, and meetings
  • Must be willing to travel
