Job summary

The Town of Penetanguishene seeks an Aquatic Instructor/Guard to assist the Aquatic Supervisor and Head Instructor in delivering aquatics programs for our community. You will instruct learn-to-swim and other swimming skills, help supervise activities, and ensure safety rules are followed.

Candidates should hold Lifesaving Society Bronze Cross, current First Aid/CPR C, and National Lifeguard Service preferred; police reference check is required.

Qualifications

• Lifesaving Society Bronze Cross mandatory.
• National Lifeguard Service preferred.
• Standard First Aid and CPR C current.
• Police reference check required.
• Availability for evenings and varying shifts.
• French language skills are assets.

Responsibilities

• Instruct learn-to-swim programs and other swimming skill programs as required.
• Assist in supervision and organization of aquatic activities.
• Instruct and educate all groups on pool rules and enforce them.
• Assist with maintenance and cleanliness of facility and equipment.
• Maintain records: class progress, attendance, test sheets, and reports.
• Report safety concerns or students needing extra help to supervisor.
• Work as a team with supervisors and staff; know emergency procedures.
• Attend staff meetings and training; provide excellent customer service.
• Perform other duties as requested by Aquatics Supervisor or Director.

Job description

The Town of Penetanguishene is a picturesque bilingual community with a population of approximately 10,000, located on the southerly tip of beautiful Georgian Bay.

The Aquatic Instructor/Guard will assist the Aquatic Supervisor and Aquatic Head Instructor/Guard to provide aquatics programs for the Town of Penetanguishene.

Duties include but are not limited to:

• Instruct learn-to-swim programs and such other swimming skill programs as may be required.
• Assist in the supervision and in the organization of aquatic activities.
• Instruct and educate all groups and individuals concerning the rules of the pool, and to enforce these rules.
• Assist with the maintenance and cleanliness of the facility and equipment as required.
• Maintain adequate records and (a) reporting class progress, (b) class attendance, (c) test sheets, (d) students passing and (e) other report forms as required.
• Bring to the attention of the Aquatics Supervisor or designate, any safety concern or case of a student unable to keep pace with the class in order that this person may receive special assistance or be re-evaluated.
• Endeavour at all times to work as a team with supervisors and fellow staff.
• Be thoroughly familiar with emergency procedures, to teach same to class members and to carry them out in emergencies.
• Attend and take active part in staff meetings and training.
• Provide excellent customer service at all times and promptly report any concerns of customer dissatisfaction to the Aquatics Supervisor or designate.
• To perform other duties as and when requested by the Aquatics Supervisor or in his/her absence the Director of Recreation and Community Services.

Required Qualifications:

• Life Saving Society Bronze Cross
• Current National Lifeguard Service preferred
• Life Saving Society Instructors or equivalent would be an asset
• Current Standard First Aid and CPR "C"
• Police reference check is required.
• Availability for varying shifts, evenings and afternoons are required.
• Automated External Defibrillator skills would be considered an asset.
• Waterfront certification would be considered an asset.
• Written and oral French language skills would be considered an asset
• Experience teaching swimming classes would be considered an asset
• High Five Principles of Healthy Child Development (PHCD) is an asset

Compensation: The current pay for this position is $19.22 (2025 rate) per hour.
