Why Work Here

For over 40 years, New West Truck Centres has been a trusted partner in Western Canada's transportation industry. As an authorized Freightliner and Western Star dealer, we're known for quality service, technical expertise, and strong customer relationships.

Our Medicine Hat Service team is looking for an Apprentice Heavy Duty Mechanic who wants to develop their skills, gain hands‑on experience, and build a long‑term career in the heavy‑duty truck industry.

Whether you're just starting your apprenticeship or working toward your Journeyperson certification, you'll have the opportunity to learn from experienced technicians while working on a wide range of heavy‑duty trucks and systems.

Treated Well

We believe good people deserve a workplace where they're respected, supported, and given the tools to succeed.

You’ll join a close-knit Medicine Hat service team that values teamwork, accountability, and pride in workmanship.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • Competitive hourly wages ranging from $26.97 to $44.46, based on apprenticeship level and experience

  • Hourly pay, not flat rate. You're paid for the hours you work, not based on billed repair hours or how quickly individual jobs are completed

  • Consistent Monday to Friday schedule, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM

  • No rotating shifts

  • Health and dental benefits

  • Vision and life insurance

  • Employee and Family Assistance Program

  • A professional shop environment with experienced technicians and leadership who support your development

Trained Well

We don't expect apprentices to know everything. We do expect a willingness to learn, ask questions, and take ownership of their development.

At New West Truck Centres, training is a key part of building strong technicians.

You’ll have access to:

  • Hands‑on mentorship from experienced Journeyperson Technicians and Shop Foremen

  • Manufacturer‑specific training through Freightliner, Western Star, and Detroit Diesel

  • Exposure to modern diagnostic equipment, repair procedures, and heavy‑duty truck technology

  • Opportunities to develop your mechanical, electrical, and diagnostic skills

  • Ongoing support as you progress through your apprenticeship

Our goal is to help you become a confident, capable technician who takes pride in the quality of their work.

Trusted Well

As an Apprentice Heavy Duty Mechanic, you'll play an important role in keeping our customers' trucks operating safely and efficiently.

Working alongside our experienced service team, you'll be trusted to take ownership of your work while continuing to develop your technical abilities.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, servicing, and repairs on heavy‑duty trucks

  • Assist with diagnosing and repairing engines, transmissions, braking systems, electrical systems, and aftertreatment systems

  • Complete mechanical repairs under the guidance of experienced Journeyperson Technicians

  • Use diagnostic equipment and technical resources to identify and troubleshoot mechanical concerns

  • Review work orders and communicate repair findings with the service team

  • Accurately document repairs completed and time spent on assigned work

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area

  • Follow established safety procedures and manufacturer repair standards

  • Participate in ongoing technical training and apprenticeship development

What You Bring

We're looking for someone who has a solid mechanical foundation, a willingness to learn, and the right attitude to succeed in a team environment.

Required Qualifications
  • Registered 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th Year Heavy Equipment Technician Apprentice

  • Previous hands‑on experience working on trucks

  • Basic set of tools required to perform assigned work

  • Valid Class 5 driver's licence

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting abilities

  • Commitment to workplace safety and quality workmanship

  • Reliable, accountable, and comfortable working as part of a team
