Job description

Reporting to the Director, Admissions and Recruitment, and the Coordinator, Student Recruitment, this position advises prospective Indigenous students on program selection and admission to all undergraduate programs and non-credential undergraduate offerings. It plays a key role in achieving the University’s enrolment targets and is responsible for communicating the benefits of a Mount Royal education, generating inquiries, and applications.

The role involves networking with university staff and faculty to stay informed about programs and services, and advocating for Indigenous students throughout the admission process. The specialist collaborates with high school counsellors, career practitioners, and Indigenous communities to promote educational partnerships and disseminate accurate information about Mount Royal’s programs and services.

This is a full-time, term position working 35 hours per week, ending February 28, 2025.

Responsibilities

  1. Develop and manage initiatives to recruit Indigenous students by establishing contacts within Indigenous communities, organizing high school and community visits, and monitoring prospective student interest.
  2. Coordinate with the MRU Iniskim Centre to promote awareness of services for Indigenous students and provide ongoing support during and after recruitment.
  3. Provide accurate, timely, and professional information about the University, programs, admission requirements, services, and facilities, focusing on Indigenous students.
  4. Meet prospective students by appointment and handle inquiries via email and phone.
  5. Arrange travel and participate in recruitment events mainly within Alberta (occasionally beyond) to present to prospective students in high schools and community settings.
  6. Conduct information sessions and campus tours.

Qualifications

  1. 3 or 4-year Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  2. 2 to 3 years of related experience.
  3. Familiarity with Indigenous communities, history, and culture.
  4. Strong public speaking and written communication skills.
  5. Ability to work independently and collaboratively, including evenings and weekends.
  6. Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
  7. Proficiency in computer and software technology.
  8. Willingness and ability to travel extensively during peak periods.
  9. Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle, with business insurance as a condition of employment.
