Job summary

AMBICO in Ottawa, ON seeks an Engineering & Systems Technician to advance standardized workflows, parametric design, and automation across engineering outputs.

Qualifications

• Post-secondary education in Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Automation, or a related field.
• Combination of technical drafting/design education with programming or automation training is strongly preferred.
• Experience with parametric CAD systems, drafting, and automation in design workflows.

About the role

Reporting to the Director of Engineering and Research and Development, the Engineering & Systems Technician is responsible for maintaining and advancing the efficiency, accuracy, and scalability of AMBICO’s engineering, design and documentation. The role focuses on developing, implementing, and maintaining standardized workflows, parametric design systems, and automation solutions that support product development and production while ensuring consistency and manufacturability across all engineering outputs.

This position plays a key role in reducing errors, improving design cycle times, and optimizing engineering capacity by embedding automation, structured data practices, and continuous improvement into daily operations. The incumbent is accountable for the integrity and performance of the engineering drawing and model library and collaborates cross-functionally with internal teams to deliver high-quality, repeatable outputs and scalable solutions that enhance overall operational effectiveness.

What you’ll do

• Manage and continuously improve the engineering drawing and model library, ensuring accuracy, standardization, and alignment with manufacturing requirements
• Develop, implement, and maintain automation solutions to streamline engineering and documentation workflows (e.g., CAD automation, scripting, template generation, rule-based design)
• Standardize design and drafting processes across the engineering teams to reduce variability, improve consistency, and minimize production errors
• Audit and validate drawings and models to ensure compliance with internal standards, manufacturability, and quality requirements
• Create and enhance technical documentation systems, including but not limited to specifications, installation instructions, and product documentation
• Creates, review and update website AutoCAD drawings based on engineering specifications
• Collaborate with internal teams to identify opportunities to reduce manual effort, errors, and cycle times through system improvements
• Translate design and engineering requirements into scalable tools, templates, and workflows that improve speed and accuracy of design outputs
• Analyze engineering and production data to identify trends, inefficiencies, and opportunities for improvement
• Contribute to the development of SOPs, design standards, and system documentation, ensuring sustainability of improvements
• Act as a liaison between engineering and IT/automation initiatives, where applicable
• Work collaboratively and safely with colleagues in cross-functional roles and departments for related projects.
• Other related duties, as assigned.

Qualifications

Education:

Post-secondary education in Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Automation, or a related field

AND

Combination of technical drafting/design education with programming or automation training is strongly preferred

• Knowledge of and advanced experience using parametric 2D and 3D CAD systems (Solid Edge preferred or equivalent) and drafting.
• Knowledge of automation tools within CAD environments
• Knowledge of programming/scripting languages
• Experience developing or implementing automation solutions within engineering or design workflows
• Experience developing templates, macros, or automated outputs for drawings or documentation
• Experience organizing and reviewing research testing and documentation
• Experience preparing written reports and documentation for management reviews
• Experience managing organizing a library or technical resources for department access.
• Experience developing standard operating procedures and related documentation with updates, as needed.
• Experience with sheet metal fabrication and design is preferred.
• Experience using Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel, Visual Basics, JavaScript and PDF form creation
