About the Role:
The prime objective of the Environmental Technician in the Greenstone Gold Mine (GGM) will be involvement in ongoing environmental information review and gathering throughout the Project. This employee will work within the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO). The Environmental Technician will monitor the operations of the Greenstone Gold Mine through on-site monitoring, including water monitoring in the field. Collected data will be analysed and interpreted throughout the monitoring program by the technician as well as in a team with the onsite Environmental Team and MNO staff. The data will be synthesized and presented regularly to the MNO Environmental Committee as well as MNO regional communities in Region II regarding any issues that have the potential to affect Métis rights, land use or way of life. When on-site the employee will take direction of the GGM Managers and LRC when off-project site.
What you will be doing:
- Responsible for collecting, analyzing, and reviewing environmental data related to the Greenstone Gold Mine (GGM) activities both off-site (20%) and in-project site (80%); Duties include, but are not limited to, research, liaising and reporting on GGM projects and initiatives primarily in MNO Regions II.
- Reviewing and providing recommendations on Greenstone Gold Mine permit studies and applications on behalf of the MNO; including developing and maintaining contacts with Greenstone Mine representatives, on projects, relevant issues and initiatives affecting and impacting communities in MNO Region II.
- Assisting in the review of environmental monitoring data and impacts to Métis rights.
- Assisting in monitoring surveys including aquatic, terrestrial, air, fish, amphibian and bird surveys.
- Planning and executing engagement activities with the Region II and the wider-MNO community, such as consultation meetings, GGM site tours and community information sessions, etc.
- Duties include, but are not limited to, scheduling, confirming budgets, booking venues/catering, preparation of expense forms, purchase orders, agendas, briefings, briefing notes and leading meetings with Region II, proponents, government officials, and MNO communities.
- Participating as a member of the GGM and MNO Environment Subcommittee.
- Participating in MNO Regional Consultation Committee (RCC) meetings to provide updates on Greenstone Gold Mine operations, and reporting back to Greenstone Gold Mines any concerns of the MNO or their citizens.
- Participating in any discussions relating to the mitigation of negative environmental impacts on the Metis community, including liaising with the appropriate Ministries in Ontario.
- Working collaboratively with other staff of the LRC Branch, and applicable MNO Branches on assigned projects, initiatives and issues.
- Maintaining a thorough record of all activities and engagement associated with GGM project, relevant issues and initiatives. Software such as MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and SharePoint or other project management software may be implemented for project and other related coordination purposes.
- Maintaining a record of reports prepared for the MNO, as well as associated documents (e.g., results, notices, scientific reports)
- Promoting the values of the organization within the workplace and in the community by demonstrating positive and professional relationships with others (employees, citizens, council, volunteers, advocates, etc.)
- Reporting all unsafe conditions, hazards or practices, accidents and incidents in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and adhering to all health and safety requirements within the GGM health and safety procedures, MNO’s policies and procedures and provincial legislation. This includes the regular use of SPOT devices and tag-in/tag-out procedures.
- Performing other collaborative work to improve processes, standards and job/branch-related duties as required.
Qualifications:
- College Diploma (1 or 2 year) / Post-secondary education in a relevant field or equivalent combination of technical/field experience and Metis cultural knowledge
- 1 to 3 years of experience in (e.g. environmental, forestry, water resources).
- An understanding of environmental technology and ability to take samples;
- Presentation and facilitation skills;
- Outdoor and field experience and licenses (e.g. operating boat, canoe, ATV).
- A background in Traditional Land Use, mining, environmental sector, ecology, biology, chemistry, Indigenous/Métis studies
- An understanding of environmental issues and Métis issues or a demonstrated ability and willingness to learn about these and other processes and issues quickly
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills in order to liaise with MNO leadership, MNO staff, and Greenstone Gold Mine staff
Preferred Qualifications:
- Understanding of government regulations pertaining to mine operations is an asset
