European Payments Initiative seeks a Design Lead for Interoperability to shape the next generation of Europe’s payments ecosystem. You will translate multi-party requirements into intuitive journeys across banks, merchants, PSPs, acquirers, and partner schemes.

You will collaborate with Product, Engineering, Architecture, Risk, Compliance, Operations, and external partners in a remote-first setup to ensure fast, secure, accessible solutions across markets.

In today’s digital Europe, payments still feel too complicated. Random delays, confusing rules, extra apps and accounts make it harder than it should be to pay and get paid.

The European Payments Initiative is changing that with Wero, a proudly European digital wallet to make payments easier, clearer and more secure. Online, in store, at home and across borders, with your money and data protected under European laws and regulations.

Wero is live in Belgium, France, Germany and the Netherlands and launching very soon in Luxembourg and Austria. Backed by 17 major banks and the two largest European acquirers, we’re building a brand new, proudly European payment system.

What's In It For You

In this role, you’ll shape the experience of Europe’s next-generation interoperable payment ecosystem. You’ll design and deliver world-class payment journeys across Wero, banks, merchants, PSPs, acquirers, and partner schemes, turning complex multi-party requirements into intuitive, reliable, human-centered experiences that millions can rely on.

You’ll lead the conception and prototyping of critical interoperability journeys, influence experience principles across the organisation, and help define how seamless European payments feel in everyday life. Working closely with Product, Engineering, Architecture, Research, Content Design, Risk, Compliance, Operations, PSPs, and partner payment schemes in a collaborative, remote-first environment, you’ll ensure our solutions are fast, secure, accessible, and empowering by design.

Our roadmap spans discovery, prototyping, specification, pilot, testing, integration within Wero, and rollout across markets and use cases. You’ll provide design continuity across these phases, ensuring consistency, clarity, and usability as the interoperability ecosystem scales.

This is a rare opportunity to become a trusted Interoperability design reference within EPI, working alongside teams across the organisation as interoperable European payments expand in scope and impact.

At EPI, we embrace a remote-first culture, enabling our teams to work remotely from the country they are based in, with in-person meetings at least once a quarter to foster collaboration and connection.

About The Team

You will work closely with Product and Engineering counterparts as part of the Interoperability domain, and you will be reporting into the Head of Experience Design. From day one, you will act as a Design Lead for Interoperability, turning complex and sometimes ambiguous requirements into clear, implementable experience solutions and scalable design decisions.

You will be embedded in the Interoperability domain, working within a cross-functional product team alongside Product, Engineering, Architecture, Risk, Compliance, Operations, PSPs, and partner payment schemes. At the same time, you will be part of a wider Design organisation of around 14 people, including Product Design, Research, Content Design, and Design Operations.

While Product Designers are embedded within specific domains, disciplines such as Research, Content Design, and Operations work transversally across teams. This gives you both domain ownership and access to shared expertise, enabling strong collaboration across the organisation.

You will collaborate in a matrix setup across Europe, contributing to payment interoperability initiatives that span multiple teams, partners, systems, and markets. As the roadmap progresses from discovery and prototyping to pilot, integration, and rollout, you will provide design continuity and ensure experience quality across phases.

Your impact

• Conceive, design, and deliver implementable user interface flows to create world‑class interoperable payment experiences for consumers, merchants, and partners.
• Present and defend product design recommendations and Wero experience principles to senior stakeholders across EPI, member banks, PSPs, acquirers, merchants, and partner payment schemes.
• Act as a design reference for Interoperability experiences, collaborating closely with UX, Product, Engineering, Architecture, Risk, Compliance, and Operations partners to ensure solutions are fast, reliable, dynamic, and empowering.
• Collaborate cross‑functionally to translate complex interoperability challenges into clear, usable interfaces, including routing, aliases, directories, payment statuses, settlement, reconciliation, refunds, disputes, fraud, compliance, scheme rules, and fallback states.
• Nurture mutually respectful and collaborative relationships with EPI colleagues and extended partner teams.
• Contribute to inclusive and accessible design practices across all solutions.

Product Design Craft & Systems Thinking

• 6+ years of experience as a Product Designer in a product-led environment, with a track record of shaping complex digital products from concept to launch
• Strong background in end-to-end product design with advanced UI design skills
• Advanced proficiency in Figma
• Ability to balance craft, speed, and pragmatism in a real-world product environment
• Ability to maintain clear, well-structured design artifacts and documentation

Designing in Regulated, Multi-Party Payment Environments

• Experience translating abstract, regulatory, operational, and multi-party payment requirements into intuitive, user-centered solutions
• Experience designing for complex payment ecosystems involving consumers, merchants, PSPs, banks, schemes, risk, compliance, and operations
• Experience building to AA standard
• Experience in payment orchestration, local payment methods, account-to-account payments, wallets, acquiring, financial services, or fintech environments is considered a plus

Research & Evidence-Based Decision Making

• Qualitative and quantitative research capabilities
• Ability to use research insights and data to inform design decisions
• Proactive, ownership-driven mindset, comfortable navigating ambiguity

Collaboration, Communication & Stakeholder Management

• Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain design decisions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Stakeholder management skills, including experience working with senior leaders and external partners
• Highly collaborative mindset and ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams
• Experience working in distributed or multi-market teams is considered a plus
• Fluent in English (CEFR C1 or C2); French, German, Dutch, or other European languages are a plus
• Thrive in a remote-first, multicultural environment
