Phage is seeking a Laboratory Operator to ensure smooth day-to-day operations in a microbiology laboratory and development lab. You will prepare materials, perform routine microbiological techniques, and manage logistics for a well-stocked, compliant workspace.

You will work closely with scientists and technicians, maintain accurate records, and contribute to safety, quality, and efficiency in a hybrid work environment.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma with laboratory specialization or relevant degree.
  • Internships or coursework count as relevant experience.
  • Exposure to microbiology lab practices is a plus.

Responsabilités

  • Prepare culture media, buffers and reagents according to procedures.
  • Pour and prepare agar plates for routine microbiological work.
  • Prepare sterile consumables and materials required for lab activities.
  • Ensure lab equipment and spaces are clean and organized.
  • Apply aseptic techniques during all lab activities.
  • Record observations accurately and report results.
  • Support routine lab activities following SOPs.

As a Laboratory Operator, you play a key role inensuring the smooth day-to-day operation of the microbiology laboratory andprocess development laboratory. You are responsible for preparing laboratorymaterials and reagents, performing routine microbiological techniques, managinglaboratory logistics, and maintaining an organized, clean, and well-stockedlaboratory environment.

Will report to the Technical Operations Managerand working closely with the Lab team, you contribute to the efficiency oflaboratory activities by providing reliable operational support and ensuringthat laboratory resources are always available when needed.

What your days could look like

Laboratory Logistics
  • Monitor laboratory inventory and maintain adequate stock levels of consumables and reagents.
  • Prepare purchase requests and follow-up laboratory orders.
  • Receive, inspect and organize incoming laboratory materials.
  • Prepare and ship biological samples and laboratory materials according to internal procedures and applicable regulations.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records and organize laboratory storage areas.
Teamwork
  • Collaborate effectively with scientists, laboratory technicians and the Laboratory Manager.
  • Communicate laboratory needs and priorities in a timely manner.
  • Support the team with day-to-day operational activities as required.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to assist across different laboratory tasks.
Quality & Safety
  • Follow laboratory safety rules and biosafety procedures at all times.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records and documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory procedures, quality standards and good laboratory practices.
  • Identify and communicate operational issues that may impact laboratory activities.
  • Contribute to maintaining an efficient, safe and well-organized laboratory environment.
Laboratory Operations
  • Prepare culture media, buffers, reagents and laboratory solutions according to established procedures.
  • Pour and prepare agar plates for routine microbiological work.
  • Prepare sterile consumables and materials required for laboratory activities.
  • Ensure all laboratory equipment and workspaces are clean, organized and ready for use.
  • Apply aseptic techniques during all laboratory activities.
  • Perform routine cleaning, sanitization and waste disposal according to laboratory procedures.
  • Perform routine bacteriophage susceptibility assays, including spot tests and Gratia (plaque) assays.
  • Prepare bacterial cultures and bacteriophage dilutions for routine testing.
  • Record laboratory observations accurately and report any unexpected results.
  • Double check activities or documentation.
  • Support routine laboratory activities following approved SOPs and instructions.

What you bring to the table

Education & training

  • High school diploma with a laboratory specialization, technical degree or Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Biology or a related scientific field.
  • Recent graduates are welcome — internships, academic lab work or practical coursework count as relevant experience.
  • Hands-on exposure to a microbiology lab during studies, an internship or a summer placement is an asset.
  • Coursework or practical training in microbiological media and reagent preparation is a plus.
  • Exposure to routine microbiological techniques (plating, dilutions, culturing, counting) through practicals or internships is desirable.
  • Any exposure to bacteriophages is a bonus, not an expectation — full training will be provided.

Technical skills

  • Understanding of aseptic technique and basic microbiology good practice, with the ability to apply it consistently at the bench.
  • Able to prepare laboratory solutions and media accurately by following a written protocol.
  • Comfortable with basic lab calculations (dilutions, concentrations, unit conversions).
  • Willing and able to perform repetitive laboratory tasks with a consistently high level of accuracy.
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office).
  • Able to read and understand technical documentation in English and communicate in basic technical English.
  • Well organized, detail-oriented and rigorous in record-keeping.
  • Reliable and conscientious — follows protocols carefully and flags issues rather than improvising.
  • Eager to learn, receptive to feedback and quick to apply training.
  • Practical, hands-on mindset with a genuine interest in lab work.
  • Able to organize multiple routine tasks across a working day.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills; comfortable asking questions when unsure.
  • Proactive and willing to support colleagues when needed.
