Job summary

Mediahuis is seeking a medior to senior Freelance AI Native Engineer to design, build and operate the internal AI platform. You will develop secure, scalable services that connect AI models, tools and workflows across the organization, with emphasis on identity, governance and automation.

You will work in a hybrid setup with two days per week at our Antwerp office, collaborating with cross-functional teams to enable secure, reliable AI usage and scalable model infrastructure.

Qualifications

• Medior or senior backend engineer with strong Go experience.
• Experience with distributed systems and event-driven architectures.
• Familiar with authentication and security technologies (OAuth2, OIDC, token management, encryption).
• Proficient in Linux environments, containers and modern deployment practices.
• Experience with LLM APIs, tool calling, streaming or MCP integrations.

Responsibilities

• Develop and operate the internal AI platform, focusing on Go-based distributed services.
• Integrate language models and external tools through APIs and MCP.
• Implement identity, governance, secrets management, audit logging and access controls.
• Enable self-service capabilities for internal teams to connect tools and workflows.

As a Freelance AI Native Engineer you’ll help shape the technological foundation that enables Mediahuis teams to use AI securely and efficiently. You’ll build distributed services, integrate language models and external tools, and ensure that identity, security and governance are embedded throughout the platform. Your work will directly contribute to making AI accessible, reliable and scalable across Mediahuis.

Your role includes.

• Developing and maintaining our AI platform, primarily using Go, with a focus on distributed services, event-driven architecture and message-based communication.
• Building secure AI integrations, connecting LLM providers, self-hosted models and external tools through APIs and the Model Context Protocol (MCP).
• Implementing identity and governance mechanisms, including OAuth2, OIDC, secrets management, audit logging and policy-based access controls.
• Enabling self-service capabilities, allowing internal teams to connect their own tools, workflows and AI agents without requiring direct intervention from the platform team.
• Developing and optimizing model infrastructure, integrating multiple AI providers and self-hosted models while considering performance, cost and data sensitivity.
• Managing deployments and platform operations, including Linux containers, configuration management, release processes, monitoring and rollback procedures.
• Contributing to architecture and technical decisions, documenting designs and decisions through Architecture Decision Records (ADRs) and ensuring consistent engineering standards.
• Collaborating with internal stakeholders, integrating the platform with workflow automation, desktop assistants and other business applications.

You’ll work in a hybrid setup, with at least two days per week at our Antwerp office, collaborating closely with colleagues across Mediahuis.

What makes you a great fit?

What's on your CV, is important but is by no means the only thing we attach importance to. You're a medior or senior engineer with solid experience in backend development and distributed systems, preferably using Go (Golang). You understand how event-driven architectures and message-based services operate in production and have experience with authentication and security technologies such as OAuth2, OIDC, token management and encryption. You're familiar with Linux environments, containers and modern deployment practices. Ideally, you've already worked with LLM APIs, tool calling, streaming or MCP integrations. You enjoy translating technical designs into reliable production solutions, documenting architectural decisions and taking ownership of your work from design to delivery. You're analytical, structured and comfortable working in a small, autonomous engineering team. You communicate effectively in both Dutch and English.

Experience with GPU-based model serving, workflow automation, observability, audit pipelines or platform engineering is considered an additional asset.
