Job summary

Paynovate SA, a growing Belgian fintech, is looking for an Engineering Team Lead (Acquiring) to combine hands-on backend leadership with people management. You will modernise payment systems, guide delivery priorities and coach engineers, joining the Engineering leadership to shape technical direction with Product, Finance, Compliance and Operations.

Qualifications

• Strong experience with PHP and its ecosystem (Laravel) and backend development
• Relational databases experience (MySQL), including data modelling and migrations
• Practical experience with AWS, software reliability and production environments
• Experience leading an engineering team, including people management, coaching and delivery ownership
• Ability to design and evolve backend architectures, with APIs, performance, troubleshooting, testing, data integrity and transactional reliability
• Excellent communication with cross-team collaboration and business understanding
• Professional working proficiency in English
• Nice-to-have: TypeScript, Go, Terraform, Kubernetes, CI/CD, payments/fintech domain, high-availability systems, French or Dutch language skills

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain backend applications primarily in PHP (Laravel)
• Modernise legacy systems while keeping production stable and contribute to architecture redesigns and AWS migrations
• Design and improve complex relational databases, including data modelling and migrations
• Build and maintain APIs, payment integrations and internal tools
• Support deployments and troubleshoot production issues
• Improve code quality, testing, documentation, observability and reliability
• Lead delivery planning and execution, balancing team capacity and priorities
• Evolve SDLC and change-management practices for predictable delivery
• Lead one-on-ones, give feedback and conduct performance reviews
• Manage recruitment, onboarding and team development, coaching engineers
• Ensure clear communication within the team and with stakeholders
