/ Bypass-Enabling Interconnections for Shade-Tolerant Perovskite Modules

Bypass-Enabling Interconnections for Shade-Tolerant Perovskite Modules

Master internship - Genk | About a week ago

One important challenge is the integration of bypass diodes in perovskite modules. In conventional silicon PV modules, bypass diodes are essential to reduce power losses and prevent local overheating or damage under partial shading and current mismatch. For perovskite and other thin-film PV modules, this issue is even more critical because the modules are commonly divided into narrow series-connected cell stripes. Under non-uniform illumination, shading or local defects, these series-connected stripes can strongly limit the current of the entire module, causing significant power loss and potentially accelerating degradation. Therefore, new module architectures that allow more current pathways and integrated bypassing strategies are needed to improve real-world performance and reliability.

The aim of this project is to explore newinterconnection concepts for thin-film photovoltaic technologies, with a particular focus on approaches that enable the integration of bypass diodes in perovskite modules. The work will involve the development and evaluation of novel interconnection approaches using experimental fabrication and characterization methods. Wire/ribbon-based and screen-printed interconnection approaches will be used to create conductive pathways and explore new module layouts. The fabricated modules will be characterized using IV measurements to evaluate electrical performance, while electroluminescence (EL) and photoluminescence (PL) imaging will be used to study defects, current pathways, interconnection quality and degradation behaviour.

Based on the results obtained during the thesis/internship, there may also be the possibility to develop a PhD proposal for FWO funding, with submission planned for March 2027. In case of approval, the student could start the PhD program from November 2027.

The work will be carried out in the laboratories of imec at the EnergyVille campus, Genk, working within the MPOWER (module technology experts) and Thin Film Photovoltaics (perovskite devices experts) teams.

Perovskite photovoltaic technologies are among the most promising candidates for next-generation solar modules due to their high efficiency potential, low-temperature processing and compatibility with lightweight and flexible substrates. However, moving from small-area cells to reliable large-area modules still requires major advances in module design, interconnection and reliability.
