Job summary

Byron Shire Council is seeking a Utilities Systems Inspection Officer to protect water and sewer integrity through hands-on inspections, compliance checks and active customer engagement with contractors and the community.

You will inspect on-site, discuss obligations with customers, and help explain compliance steps, combining practical fieldwork with strong people skills in a collaborative environment.

Qualifications

• Experience in water, wastewater, plumbing, drainage or environmental management.
• Strong customer service and stakeholder engagement skills in field/regulatory environments.
• Ability to explain requirements clearly and professionally to diverse audiences.
• Knowledge of water reticulation and sewerage collection systems and related regulations.

Responsibilities

• Conduct inspections, testing and audits of water and sewer-related systems across the Shire.
• Explain requirements to customers, property owners and contractors to support compliance.
• Investigate issues, review field information and support approvals and non-compliance notices.
• Manage compliance programs including liquid trade waste, backflow devices and water reuse systems.
• Maintain accurate records and registers to support compliance and reporting.
• Provide practical information and technical advice to customers and stakeholders.
• Contribute to improvements in policies, systems and processes.
