Job summary

Byron Shire Council seeks a Utilities Systems Inspection Officer to protect the integrity of its water and sewer networks while engaging directly with customers, contractors and the community.

This hands‑on role blends field inspections, compliance work and problem solving with strong communication and stakeholder engagement. Based in Byron Bay, travel within the Shire may be required.

Qualifications

• Experience in water, wastewater, plumbing, drainage or environmental management.
• Strong customer service and stakeholder engagement in field/regulatory settings.
• Ability to explain technical requirements clearly and professionally.
• Owns a driver licence and can work independently in the field.

Responsibilities

• Perform inspections and audits of water and sewer systems across the Shire.
• Explain requirements to customers, owners and contractors to support compliance.
• Investigate issues and support approvals and non‑compliance notices.
• Manage compliance programs including liquid trade waste and backflow devices.
• Maintain accurate records and reporting registers.
• Provide practical information and technical advice to stakeholders.
• Contribute to policy and process improvements.
