Help protect the integrity of Byron Shire's water and sewer systems in a hands-on role combining inspections, compliance and customer engagement.

You might come from a water and wastewater background, plumbing, drainage or environmental management, or from a customer-facing, regulatory or compliance environment where you've developed strong investigation, communication, customer service and stakeholder engagement skills.

About the opportunity

Byron Shire Council is seeking a Utilities Systems Inspection Officer to help protect the integrity of our water and sewer systems while working directly with customers, contractors and the broader community.

This is a varied, hands-on role combining field inspections, compliance, problem-solving and customer engagement. You'll spend time out on site inspecting and investigating water and sewer systems, talking to customers and contractors about their obligations, and helping people understand what they need to do to achieve compliance. This is a fantastic opportunity to combine your hands on experience with your people skills!

What you’ll be doing
  • Conduct inspections, testing and audits of water and sewer-related systems across the Shire.
  • Work directly with customers, property owners, contractors and other stakeholders to explain requirements and support compliance.
  • Investigate issues, review field information and support the issuing of approvals and non-compliance notices.
  • Manage compliance programs covering liquid trade waste, backflow devices, private infrastructure and water reuse systems.
  • Maintain accurate records and registers to support compliance and reporting.
  • Provide practical information and technical advice to customers and stakeholders.
  • Contribute to improvements in policies, systems and processes.
What we’re looking for

For this role, how you work with people is just as important as your technical capability.

You'll be comfortable meeting customers on site, asking questions, explaining requirements clearly and professionally, and navigating situations where people may not immediately understand or agree with what is required.

We're looking for someone with:

  • Experience in water, wastewater, plumbing, drainage, environmental management, compliance or a related field.
  • Strong customer service and stakeholder engagement skills, particularly in a field-based or regulatory environment.
  • Confidence communicating with different people an explaining technical or compliance requirements in practical terms.
  • The ability to work responsibly and independently in the field, use sound judgement and manage your own priorities.
  • Knowledge of water reticulation and sewerage collection systems.
  • Experience interpreting and applying regulations, standards, policies or compliance requirements.
  • Strong organisational and problem-solving skills.
  • Good computer and reporting skills.
  • Current Driver Licence.
Highly regarded:
  • Certificate IV in Water Industry Operations (Liquid Trade Waste Regulation) or willingness to obtain.
  • Background in plumbing, drainage, environmental health or wastewater operations.
  • Knowledge of wastewater monitoring, sampling and testing techniques.
  • Confined Space or Construction WHS certifications.
  • Experience in policy development or process improvement.
