Job summary

People Group Recruitment is seeking a skilled Draftsman / Mechanical Designer to join an engineering team in Woodridge, Queensland. You will design and develop rugged automotive aftermarket components such as towbars and bull bars, translating concepts into manufacturing-ready drawings and BOMs, with a focus on safety standards.

Ideal candidates have 2+ years in structural sheet metal or automotive accessory design, advanced SolidWorks in sheet metal and weldments, and a strong grasp of

Qualifications

• 2+ years in structural sheet metal, fabrication or automotive accessory design.
• Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks (Sheet Metal, Weldments, Large Assemblies).
• Strong understanding of manufacturing processes including laser cutting, CNC bending, welding.
• Knowledge of GD&T and ability to create accurate BOMs and fabrication notes.

Responsibilities

• Create 3D models and 2D manufacturing drawings for automotive aftermarket accessories (bull bars, towbars, side steps, underbody protection).
• Utilise SolidWorks to design sheet metal components, weldments, and complex assemblies.
• Prepare detailed engineering drawings with BOMs, tolerancing, and fabrication notes.
• Assist in building and testing physical prototypes to ensure fitment and structural integrity.
• Ensure designs comply with national automotive ADR or regional safety standards.
• Collaborate with workshop fabricators, production teams and marketing to refine designs for manufacturability and aesthetics.

About the Role

We are seeking a skilled Draftsman / Mechanical Designer to join an engineering team. In this role, you will design and develop rugged, high-quality automotive aftermarket products, specifically focusing on towbars, bull bars, and related structural accessories. You will take concepts from initial design through to manufacturing‑ready production drawings, ensuring compliance with automotive safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Create 3D models and 2D manufacturing drawings for automotive aftermarket accessories (bull bars, towbars, side steps, and underbody protection).


• Utilise Solid Works to design sheet metal components, weldments, and complex assemblies.


• Prepare detailed engineering drawings with accurate Bill of Materials (BOMs), tolerancing, and fabrication notes.


• Assist in building and testing physical prototypes to ensure perfect vehicle fitment, structural integrity, and ease of installation.


• Ensure all designs comply with relevant national automotive ADR (Australian Design Rules) or regional safety standards.


• Work closely with the workshop fabricators, production teams, and marketing to refine designs for ease of manufacture and aesthetic appeal.

Skills & Experience

• 2+ years of experience in structural sheet metal, fabrication, or automotive accessory design.


• Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks is mandatory (specifically Sheet Metal, Weldments, and Large Assembly environments).


• Strong understanding of manufacturing processes including laser cutting, CNC bending, robotic/manual welding.


• High accuracy in GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) to ensure zero‑defect production.


• Knowledge of automotive wiring harnesses, basic vehicle electrical systems, or integration of electronic components (e.g., LED lighting, parking sensors) is highly advantageous.


• Experience using 3D scanners (e.g., Artec Leo) and scanning software to capture vehicle chassis data.
