Job summary

Norweld Australia is seeking a practical, detail-focused Draftsperson / Industrial Designer to support development of vehicle trays, canopies and accessories. You’ll create SolidWorks models and production-ready designs, collaborating with engineering, tradespeople and manufacturing for prototypes, testing and production release.

This role involves hands-on fabrication, prototyping and field testing, with Cairns head office as preferred location and Brisbane applicants considered.

Qualifications

• Three to five years’ experience in industrial design, drafting, mechanical design or related role.
• SolidWorks capability across assemblies, configurations, sheet metal and weldments.
• Experience designing for sheet-metal fabrication, machining, welding and manufacturing processes.
• Sound understanding of mechanical design principles, materials and manufacturing processes.
• Strong problem-solving ability, mechanical aptitude and attention to detail.
• Disciplined design control, document management and production-release processes.
• Ability to work independently, manage priorities and collaborate in a multidisciplinary team.
• Relevant qualification or equivalent demonstrated experience in industrial design or related discipline.

Responsibilities

• Developing new and improved products, components and design solutions from concept through to production release.
• Creating and modifying SolidWorks parts, assemblies and manufacturing drawings including configurations, sheet-metal components and weldments.
• Producing accurate technical drawings, bills of materials, specifications and manufacturing info.
• Applying mechanical design principles, tolerances and knowledge of materials and processes.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Norweld is seeking a practical and detail-focused Draftsperson / Industrial Designer to support the development of our vehicle tray, canopy and accessory range. Working closely with Engineering, tradespeople and Manufacturing, you will develop accurate SolidWorks models, detailed drawings and production-ready designs. The role supports products from initial concept and prototype through testing, review and approved production release.

This is not a purely desk-based drafting role. You will spend time with the people manufacturing and assembling our products, participate in practical prototyping and trials and help resolve design, fit and manufacturing issues. The position is preferably based at our Cairns head office. However, applications from suitably experienced Brisbane-based candidates will also be considered.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Developing new and improved products, components and design solutions from concept through to production release
• Creating and modifying SolidWorks parts, assemblies and manufacturing drawings, including configurations, sheet-metal components and weldments
• Producing accurate technical drawings, bills of materials, specifications and supporting manufacturing information
• Applying mechanical design principles, appropriate tolerances and knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes
• Designing for sheet-metal fabrication, machining, welding, assembly, installation, serviceability and repeatable production
• Completing design checks to confirm dimensions, fit, clearances, interfaces, tolerances and functionality
• Participating in hands-on prototype fabrication, assembly, fitment, product trials and testing
• Working with Engineering, tradespeople and Manufacturing to identify and resolve design and production issues
• Supporting the controlled introduction of new and changed products into production
• Maintaining accurate models, drawings, revisions and technical information through approved review, change and release processes

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

The successful candidate will combine strong design and drafting skills with practical mechanical thinking. You will enjoy seeing your work become a physical product and be comfortable seeking input from the people responsible for manufacturing, assembling and installing it.

Hands‑on fabrication, prototyping, assembly or vehicle fitment experience would be highly regarded, together with experience in automotive, vehicle accessories, aluminium fabrication or low-volume manufacturing.

The ideal candidate will have:

• Approximately three to five years’ experience in industrial design, drafting, mechanical design or a related design and manufacturing role
• Demonstrated SolidWorks capability across assemblies, configurations, sheet metal and weldments
• Experience designing for sheet‑metal fabrication, machining, welding and other manufacturing processes
• A sound understanding of mechanical design principles, materials and manufacturing processes
• Strong problem-solving ability, mechanical aptitude and attention to detail
• A disciplined approach to design control, document management, approvals and production‑release processes
• The ability to work independently, manage priorities and contribute effectively within a multidisciplinary team
• A relevant qualification in industrial design, mechanical drafting, engineering design or a related discipline, or equivalent demonstrated experience
