Job summary

The Sydney Opera House is seeking a multi-skilled theatre technician to provide frontline technical support across staging, lighting, sound/AV and recording for the Theatre & Precinct department. You will deliver small-scale events independently and assist production teams with first-level operational support.

Applicants should have 3+ years across production service disciplines, strong operational capability, and solid knowledge of communications and IP networks.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years’ experience across multiple production service disciplines (staging, lighting, sound, AV, communications, broadcast).
  • Strong operational capability in theatre and precinct duties, including incident response and customer service.
  • Sound technical knowledge of communications and signal transport systems (radios, paging, cue lights, intercoms, AV routing, IP networks).
  • Proven ability to interpret, create, and implement event documentation and technical requirements.
  • Effective leadership and teamwork skills with good communication, fitness, agility, and ability to work at heights.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support to production departments, venue hirers and the wider organisation as frontline Theatre & Precinct staff.
  • Support staging, lighting, sound/AV, recording and broadcast across theatre disciplines and small-scale events.
  • Produce and interpret event documentation and technical requirements.
  • Collaborate with teams to deliver reliable and safe technical operations.

Salary: Base wage of $42.94 per hour plus 23.3% casual loading, 12.25% scaled penalty and 12% superannuation contributions

YOUR NEW ROLE

This role works as part of a team to provide technical support to the production departments, venue hirers, and wider organisation, as the front line of the Theatre & Precinct department of the Technology portfolio. This position is a multi-skilled theatre technician focussed on supporting the different theatre disciplines including staging, lighting, sound/AV, and recording and broadcast, as well as delivering small-scale events independently. It provides first-level quick-response operational support for theatre systems and infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities/skills:

To be successful in this role you should be able to demonstrate:

  • 3+ years’ experience across multiple production service disciplines, including staging, lighting, sound, AV, communications, and broadcast.
  • Strong operational capability in theatre and precinct duties, including incident response, customer service, and interdisciplinary technician responsibilities.
  • Sound technical knowledge of communications and signal transport systems, including radios, paging, cue lights, intercoms, audio/video routing, and IP networks.
  • Proven ability to interpret, create, and implement event documentation and technical requirements.
  • Effective leadership and teamwork skills, supported by strong communication, physical fitness, agility, and the ability to work at heights.
