Job summary

The Sydney Opera House is seeking a skilled technical operator to join our staging team. You will lead small crews, operate staging machinery, and ensure safe, high-quality production services for a range of performances.

Successful candidates will have at least three years in professional staging, proficiency with fly systems, and a strong commitment to safety and collaboration across disciplines. An inclusive, dynamic workplace awaits with opportunities for growth.

Job Status: Ongoing Full Time (38 hours) OR Ongoing Flex Time Contract (30 hours) OR Talent Pool for future ongoing FTE or FTC or Casual Opportunities.

Salary: Base wage of $42.99 per hour plus 15.25% scale penalty and 12% Superannuation Contributions

YOUR NEW ROLE

This role works as part of a team to deliver the highest technical services in the field of staging. The role is customer focused and supports performers to achieve excellence in their field, drawing on high level of skills and experience as a technical operator and a formidable aptitude for, and comprehensive understanding of, staging equipment and systems. This role leads small technical teams to deliver outstanding theatre and entertainment production services to clients. This role upholds relevant technical and WHS standards and contributes to the ongoing development of WHS awareness at the Opera House. It also contributes to the management, development, care and security of the technical equipment at the Opera House and assists in the development of skills and standards within the Production & Events portfolio that meet presenter and SOH expectations.

ARE YOU THE ONE?

To be successful in this role you will need to demonstrate:

  • Comprehensive skills and experience (minimum 3 years) in professional staging services.
  • Ability to set and construct staging equipment and scenery by following plans and other documentation for a wide range of performances.
  • Experience in operation of all staging machinery (including hand and power tools) and equipment including fly systems and stage lifts, including Waagner-Biro CAT4 and State Automation State 5 capability. National HRW licence in dogging is also desirable.
  • Ability to lead small teams to execute an effective and efficient outcome.
  • Ability to interpret and create relevant event documents and implement technical staging production requirements.
  • Physical fitness, agility and ability to work at heights and ability to work on a rotating shift basis.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work cooperatively within teams and across multiple disciplines.
  • Commitment to abide by Opera House policies, particularly WHS procedures including manual handling techniques.
