Job description

Love working with wine, but ready to leave the late nights behind?

Terroir Port Macquarie offers something a little different — the opportunity to build a career around great wine, spirits and food while working shopping centre hours, with no late nights and a guaranteed weekend day off.

We’re looking for a hands-on Store Manager to become the face of Terroir Port Macquarie.

You might already manage a wine or liquor store, or you could be an experienced sommelier, cellar-door professional, hospitality manager or assistant manager ready to take the next step.

This is very much a working manager role. You’ll spend your time on the shop floor talking with customers, sharing your knowledge, recommending products and running the day-to-day store. As the business grows, you’ll also have the opportunity to build and develop the team around you.

This is very much a working manager role. You’ll spend your time on the shop floor talking with customers, sharing your knowledge, recommending products and running the day-to-day store. As the business grows, you’ll also have the opportunity to build and develop the team around you.

What you’ll be doing
  • Build genuine relationships with customers and become a trusted local source for great wine, spirits and food

  • Share your product knowledge in a way that is engaging, approachable and never intimidating

  • Help customers discover new wines, producers, regions and products

  • Drive sales and identify opportunities to grow the store and its customer base

  • Host tastings, activations and customer events

  • Build relationships with suppliers, winemakers, producers and the local community

  • Manage stock, ordering, inventory, merchandising and store presentation

  • Understand sales, margins, stock performance and labour and use these to make good commercial decisions

  • Work independently and take genuine ownership of the day-to-day store

  • Build, train and develop your team as the business grows

About you

First and foremost, you genuinely love wine, food and great products — and you enjoy sharing that passion with other people.

You don’t need to know everything. Curiosity and the desire to keep learning are part of what we’re looking for.

Ideally, you’ll:

  • Have strong wine and spirits knowledge gained through retail, hospitality, cellar door, distribution or formal wine education

  • Love talking with customers and making thoughtful recommendations

  • Be able to make wine approachable, whether someone is discovering their first great bottle or knows exactly what they’re looking for

  • Be confident working independently and taking responsibility for the store

  • Have a commercial mindset and understand the importance of sales, margin, stock and labour

  • Have high standards for presentation and customer experience

  • Enjoy being hands-on and working on the floor rather than managing from the sidelines

  • Want to help grow and shape a developing specialty retail business

  • Hold an RSA and meet the requirements of the relevant liquor licence

WSET qualifications or other wine education would be highly regarded, but experience, knowledge and genuine passion matter just as much.

Why this role is different

For someone who has built their career around wine and hospitality, this is an opportunity to keep doing what you love without the traditional hospitality hours.

  • $70,000–$80,000 + super, depending on experience

  • No late nights

  • Guaranteed one weekend day off

  • Shopping centre trading hours

  • Work every day with wine, spirits and artisan food

  • Tastings, producers and opportunities to continue developing your knowledge

  • Genuine ownership of a small specialty store

  • Opportunity to grow the store and build your team

  • Support of the wider Gowings business

About Terroir

Terroir is more than a bottle shop.

We’re creating a destination where customers can discover interesting wines, premium spirits, craft beer, artisan food and products from great producers — supported by genuine knowledge, personalised service and a sense of discovery.

Behind Terroir is the wider Gowings business, providing the support and resources of an established Australian company while we continue to grow the Terroir concept.

If you love wine, love people and like the idea of making both part of your working day — without making them part of your working night — we’d love to hear from you.
